Forumites,
How do you drop the tailgate on a Surf? Stepson's just bought one tonight, can't find a catch anywhere, window works OK, the gaps is to small to get all the stuff in and out if you know what I mean. Thanks in anticipation. No owners handbook or I would of looked before anybody says anything.

My 4 Runner unlocks - when I wind down the electric tailgate window, a small (2cm sqaure) lever/button pops up to the top left of centre of the tailgate. Then reach in and pull up the opening latch in the top centre of the tailgate.
I did have troubles a few times over the years when the sqaure lever/button would not automatically pop up when winding down the electric tail agte window. This would happen after rain when moisture would apparently get in to the switches inside the tailgate.
After removing the trim, blowing out the dust etc and spraying with CRC (or similar) I haven't had that problem again.
After shuting the tailgate and starting to wind up the electric window, the square button/lever automatically drops down and locks. With the 4 runner you can manually lock and unlock this button and a warning light on the dash comes on if it doesn't lock properly. There is a 'Surf' website on the net if you still have troubles.

have you tried the key one way for the window the other way unlocks the door thats how some of the japanese wagons work (not sure of surf) the window has to be all the way down -its operated like central locking with a solinoid
just a guess

Nah, it's extaclt as descirbed above as with the 4runner. (they are the same vehicle).
Took me a while the first time cos I was looking EVERYWHERE for a leaver or handle on the OUTSIDE of the tailgate, but nope, you have to wind the window down, then reach inside and open. That's why I don't have a cargo barrier as if the lecdcy window ever packs it in, you won't be able to open the tail
gate! ;-)
