Hi all my first posting, I have a BJ40 and looking to upgrade the motor and gear box. I am wanting to finish with a 6 cyl 5 speed turbo diesel and also someone to fit looking for any advice. The hope is to finish with a sexy forty that drive fantastic on and off the road, also what is the largest tyre i could fit on a 15x7 rim
thanks

The 40's came out with a 6cyl diesel, and I have seen a 1HZ turbo in a 47 with a 5 speed. The engine was a tight fit as the exhaust comes out on the R/H side of the motor. I had a standard 2H with a 5 speed and power steering. A 2HT out of a 60 series will also fit. Just do a engine gearbox/transfer case swap. There will be a bit more to it than that but its a start.

32's will fit that size rim. As for doing the work, where are you?

Easiest and cheapest way to get that combination would be to fit a 2H and aftermarket turbo kit resulting in more power than the 1HZ and 12HT engines. For good reliability it may be possible to fit the piston cooling oil jets from the 12HT if the 2H is being rebuilt.
Use a five speed that came standard with a 2H and have it fitted with the origional transmission brake to avoid having to fit the rear axle from a 5 speed cruiser, there are many other small changes necessary including tailshaft lengths, speedo cable etc. I avoided a 5 speed conversion myself by fitting 3.5:1 gears to both differentials.
