I suspect I am not the only one but I find it quite interesting. We all seem to search out the challenging bits of road, I know I envy you Victorians who seem to have so much more close at hand than us Sth Ausies. The thing that gets me about my driving, however, is that when I do find a bit of road that requires use of the little gear stick (and sometimes it's just wishfull thinking perhaps) I always find myself looking at it an picking the best route through.
Looking at it after the event, if I like a challenge, why don't I do the exact opposite and try the hardest route through? (perhaps it is the thought of how silly one might look getting stuck in something quite straight forward?)
Anyway, just wondered if it is just me or do all of you do the same?
I guess I am looking for that situation where there is no "easy route"?
Cheers
Trevor

Maybe I am different. I got my 4by to take me
places my 1978 Nissan Camper couldnt reliably take me not to try and look like something out of the tuff Truck challange. If getting somewhere that I want to go is a challange then so be it but I would rather get out and walk for a bit than risk stuffing something up in the middle of no where. Just recently I ended up on the wrong side of a 40k walk when I could have opted for a 5 min walk - never again if I can help it

I guess I was just getting a bit "deep and meaningfull" after a few reds (perhaps the "full" has meaning?). You refer to having a 4by to take you to
places a normal vehicle won't go.....a pretty common response I would suggest. I guess I was trying to be a bit more philosophical. If getting to the place was all that counted (instead of the journey as
well) then we would hope for bitumen all the way to such
places? I know that is not what you or anyone would suggest.
I just thought it strange that I find myself yearning for tough terrain and then when it does present itself my instinct is to take the "best" route through (rather than the toughest). I wondered if everyone was the same?

You're not the Lone Ranfer there.
When I travel alone I just automatically go the easiest / safest route. When mucking around in a group, I find I have to concentrate and force myself to take the most challenging path. My auto pilot keeps steering me away from it.

that's probably it actually.....most times I am by myself.
There have been the odd times I have been in a group and afterwards thought..."jeeze this was the time I should of had a go at that because he could have got me out if there was a problem"

Trevor,
I suppose that's why a lot of people are in clubs so they can, in relative comfort if they get stuck, get help without too much hassle. No doubt plenty of ribbing that night round the campfire when they do need help though.
Cheers Trevor.

Yes you are "TOTALLY" correct most of us 4x4 drivers love the hard stuff
But in this day and age of "ACCOUNTABILITY" right or wrong we have to be accountable for our actions ( don't get me wrong, I have been guilty of having mud over my truck that you can't tell it from a toyota/nissan) and I am fast reaching the
grey army status (not that there is anything wrong with that ??)
"BUT"
We live in the currant "WORLD" and that dictates that if us responsible 4x4 drivers don't do the right thing more and more tracks are going to be closed ???
You only have to look at the amount of mail on this site alone regarding negative feed back, re 4x4, ie "OUR BEST MATE SCREWBy"
The realality is "ALL OF US 4x4 ENTHUISISTS HAVE TO BE SEEN TO BE DOING THE RIGHT THING" OR in the future we will be restricted to privately run 4x4 parks.
All you
young "GUNS" out there that think what does that old "FART" Know what he is talking about make no mistake in the 20+ yrs that I have been travelling this great land of ours "THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL" there has been quite a few areas across Australia that have been restricted or closed to to 4x4 activities.
At the risk of sounding like that I am destroying "ONES" fun the "REALITY" is we have to be seen as being responsible to the environment or our "FUN" is going to be taken away from us.
Just my thoughts
Barry

Accountability may be one part of it, but another is the expense of parts and repairs.
Since having my GU I have spent nearly 2 grand replacing plastic wheel mouldings, a broken window, wheel alignments, getting scratches buffed out, having mud flaps re-attatched etc etc; and I am one of those who usually watches others trying to be silly buggers.

That was more my intended point. My mudflaps are all busted off (I think 3-400 to replace from memory) paint is so scratched I am unsure how much cutting and polishing will fix it mirror is busted, last trip my exaust mounts all busted off. If it is only cosmetic I will leave it cosz it will only get busted or scratched again (obviosly had my exaust mounts fixed) If I am gonna do this sort of damage I want to have gone somwhere new and exciting - maybe i am getting old but I dont see the point of busting the 4by up on the local weekend warrior tracks and hills

Could not agree with you more,
well said. However i'm only 23 and have no
grey hair. The point being when i do have
grey hair i still want to get the TD Hilux off road and enjoy the outdoors. Personally i feel that difficult but safe is still challenging when off road, tha amount of people up the cape that come back with thousands of dollars of damage to their trucks is plain stupid. If you want to go and do rock hopping do it in a
park that is why they are there. Some may get upset with that comment but the facts are that one day in the near future the LAW will dictate to everyone where and how they can drive even if they are the top of queenslands
cape york. Personally I feel that everyone has the right no matter what they drive to be on a public raod if the vehicle is safe and driven responsabily, however alot of the ignorant do not feel that way and unfortunelty public opinion agrees with them. Take the safe road and preserve the bush, by an old nissan and go bush bashing in it a 4wd
park, afterall thats all Nissans are good for. Go the cruisers!!!

I have to agree, I do take the easiest route and it seams to happen automatically. I also agree with what Barry said about being seen to be responible and take account for your actions. I'm a 30 year old with 3.5 y.o twins and a 6 month old, I want to get them out of the house as they grow up and show them this great country, but due to the irresponsible few among us I won't be able to take them anywhere. Last year we took a trip down the Holand track, the piece and quiet, clean, fres air and no one for
miles, in the lastest Western 4WDriver magizine there was this bit of news
Holand Track Cops a Hiding
ANd so should the vandals who went out there recently on motorbikes and 4wd's to rip up the track and sensitive areas around
granite outcrops. I mean, really, where's your head at guys? You know full
well you're doing a lot of harm. And you're really screawing the image of 4W drivers and bike riders everywhere. Not so much in the eyes of the authorities because they know the bulk of us consider the environment. But in the public's eyes we all get tarred with the same brush through the wrong ctions of a few. Let's hope land managers recognise the problem real soon and allocate special areas where you can go and play around without having to resort to desecrating fragile environments that the rest of us treasure.
Brad.

HERE HERE. Just look at Wedge and
Lancelin. It gets ripped to pieces every weekend and on long weekend it seems to be an aussie icon to go there, rip the place up, kill every and any creature in sight, and of course it is mandatory to leave as much rubbish as possible.
The only saving grace is that while all the meatheads are destroying this place, they are leaving the rest of WA for us sensible types who stick to tracks, take our rubbish home, and feed tomato's to the reptiles, instead of chasing them.

Always err on the side of caution. That way you will stay out of trouble. If you need an adrenalin rush, go swim with the white pointers! lol

I remember with a flourish the first car with a small stick I drove. White 3cyl 2stroke Zook, and THE first thing I did is look for something challenging. Its in the blood. I love getting offroad, but once there always look for thew best line, least damage route. Such is the essence of tread lightly.

I do hope you are not like a couple of clowns we met up with recently. They pulled into a
camping spot next to us with mud and dirt all over the two utes. We had seen them earlier in the trip.
Where did you get all that crap on the vehicles?. Oh we like a challenge, so we drove on some roads that had been closed due to rain!
Well, hello.
PS:the last vehicle that the authorities caught driving on closed roads copped a FINE. $1300 per wheel.....
Regards
Mike
