Has anyone got a Nissan with the 3 lt diesel motor post 2003 that is happy with the engine and manual gearbox performance, ie have not had a failure?

We have a 2005 manual at work.
Suffers badly from being gutless below about 2500 rpm. Very annoying to drive. Have a friend with an auto about 2000 model. The autos don't suffer as badly as the auto compensates at low revs.
Would not own one. I doubt if I could sleep at night waiting for the day the engine dies.

We have a 2005 manual 3.0L that has done some very hard work already (27,000K's since Feb), and I am more than happy with it.
I feel it is a tad better than my previous 3.0L 2000 model.

It performed quite well on our NT - WA trip earlier this year and averaged 13L/100Km towing the CT which is around 1 1/4 ton loaded.

I agree about it being gut less at low revs. We tried one and put it through a low rev 2nd gear foot down on a small hill and it damn near stalled. My Frontera is better at it. We ended up buying a Landcruiser.

very happy with our Nov 2002 ST GU. NO problems at all and great performance when Dtronic fitted. I think you'll hear the same from most post series 2 GUs.

So time to change the frontera.

We have now tried a diesel Navara and did not like it. I thought it was noisy, there was a lot of kick back through the steering, for an upmarket dual cab I thought it was a bit sparten, SWMBO could not be convinced that the ride would improve with some load in it and it would not pull the skin off a cold rice pudding in 2nd gear at 1200 rpm on a small hill. It had to be reving to go. This is not good when trying to crawl up a hill with aloose surface. The price was good but considering we would spend a lot of time in it when touring we crossed it off the list. We tried the new Pathfinder and whilst it is a nice vehicle my ears were on a wave length that gave me a constant drumming and the motor was noisy. We ended up buying a Landcruiser!!

Jorge

How long have you had the 2 3/4 exhaust, and did you put the exhaust on after installing the dtronic? Is it the Beaudesert Exhaust changeover kit?

Has the exhaust mod made a noticable difference to your car for 4x4 work as well as on-road?

I am tossing up the idea of either chaging the whole exhaust including Cat, or just trying a change to the main muffler first by putting a straight through muffler in its place.

I have it on over a month and I put it on with the dtronic, now I dont have the dtronic on because I took it to the nissan dealer to get the intercooler changed.
In my opinion the car works better with the new exhaust , the turbo starts( you can hear it at arond 1200 _1500 rps and the low end power has increased , you dont feel the lack of power as much, also you feel the engine that its breathing easier and accelerates faster.

the kit is from beaudessert, it cost me alot because it had to be shipped all the way to central america , the freight almost cost me the same as the exhaust. but its a good kit.
the system is all the way from the turbo to the muffler, I think you should install it( in my opinion)

Hi,

I have both Navara and patrol, both 3.0 ltr manual.

Navara has better power to weight ratio, and as such feels like it has more torque and power.

Patrol has more room inside the vehicle.

I am very happy with both cars, as I use navara for work, and patrol is the family car.

If I am going 4x4ing by myself, I take the nanvara, if family is 4x4ing or camping, we take the patrol.

Both cars happily tow our camper trailer which weighs approx 900kgs

Richard,

If you want one, just go and get one.

I am now on my second 3L Diesel Patrol, and have not had any warranty issues with either in regards to the engine or transmission.
My first one did 75,000 klms in 2 years, and the second is now at 60,000 klms, also in 2 years, and will be my vehicle, for the next 4 years or so.

1 wouldn't worry too much about the engine or manual transmission on these vehicles if you are getting one manufactured during or after late 2001. I'm certainly not!! I get out in mine and regularly use it for what it was intended for, whether it be rock hopping or desert crossing.

If you are intending using this vehicle mainly for touring and some 4x4 work, then it would be ideal for you. If you are into hardcore 4x4 action every weekend, then perhaps I would recommend the 4.2, of which I have also owned and loved, but from looking at your profile, I don't think that you would fit into that category.

I would also add that a Dtronic is a great investment for this vehicle, even if you don't get the car dirty as often as others. Great for both on and off road enjoyment.

Just to ad to the debate. We had an 80 series TD and wanted to trade up. Being a cruiser man, it was hard to change. But the $20,000 diff betweent he TD 100 Series and the 3.0l TD Patrol made it a bit easier. Basically it came down to what are we going to tow with it. We have a CT and a 4.35m boat.(not at the same time sic!) The Patrol does it easy. If we were towing a 20' van, different story, you would go the Cruiser every time.
Happy with the Patrol, it has 7 seats ideal for missus and 4 kids (and hangers on) and off road ability is as good as the cruiser.!MPG:3!

People who replied had not done a great deal of kilometerage and it appears from previous posts 100,000 plus is the start of problems. I liked the Patrol but we ended up buying a Landcruiser.

My series three has been great, only done 40,000 so far so cant really offer any brilliant suggestions. Tows my 2.2 tonne van with ease. gets around 15/100 with the van in tow. Round town about 12/100. Never heard of a navara having engine problems yet. Never heard of a series three having the often mentioned engine problem either. Series four should be even better.

Thanks for your reply but it appears to me that problems start at 100,000 plus. We ended up buying a Landcruiser.

G'day

3.0ltr GUIV manual. 30,000k and going well. Purchased the manual for the extra torque. Engine works fine from 1500rpm. The vehicle tows our ct very well. At 30,000k the engine is just starting to settle in.

Regards

Paul

Hey guys
I have a 2003 ( late ) navara 3.0 TD, and love it ,with 64k on it , she's been across the Simpson from Birdsville and will not miss a beat
But there is a trick to great performance ,,,,
1) do not flog it ,,3000 unlaiden
2) put it on a dyno, and get it tuned properly ( $135 and well worth it ) and forget about those $1500-$2000 chip units
3) when towing keep it in 4 th ( only use overdrive , 5th , on flat easy going
it will rev to 3500 at 100 km in 4 th and that will do it easy
4) Use a quality diesel oil
Happy motoring
Bucky

You bought a Landcruiser so don't really understand the purpose of your question. A better question given your choice would have been, so has anybody bought a Landcruiser and not have the front suspension fail?

Kind regards

I asked the question before I bought a Landcruiser. I went out to try and possibly buy a Navara and found for various reasons I did not lke it. I also tried the new Pathfinder. I found it was well appointed but driving it was like driving with a rear window partially open, a constant drumming. My wife did not notice it but it was a real pain to me. We went off to look at the Toyota Hilux and did not like it. Tried the Prado and liked it but my wife commented it had no more room than the Frontera. She saw the Landcruiser and it was her choice??? I was happy to go along with it so that is why we bought it.

Thats life

Fair enough. Guess it must have been a rushed decision. Had an almost similar experience when I bought the Nissan. The Toyota dealer near my place wanted to see my money before I could have a test drive. Figured we were never going to have a long friendly relationship on that basis.

I was undecided at the time but am glad I bought the Nissan.

Kind regards
