We are on the road in April '06 and we want to set up a webpage for friends and family.

Any suggestions on which software is easiest and best to use on the road.

Will have a laptop and most likely that mini broadband card from telstra for the 1st year while we wean ourselves off the net but will also use other upload measures where we can.

Hi John,

Unless you have a specific webspace in mind, and the software to edit and upload your webpages, you may be better off with this option:

http://www.blogger.com/start

John,
I just had a quick look at the blog site that Graham suggested and it looks pretty easy. I use Front Page Express for my web stuff, (it used to be free with Win98 but I don't think it is anymore) but it's a little bit of work and then after the pages are created, you have to upload them to your web space. Blog looks to be free, and looks easy enough to use.

So it depends on how far you want to go into making your page, if you're travelling you may not want to spend hours every other day updating your page.... Blog might be just the thing!

I did this last year using frontpage. I love looking back at it now - and the first couple of months were a bit of fun - but after that it really became a drag. So time consuming!!!

The thing that took the longest was deciding which photos to put in - then reducing them and inserting them into each page. The hardest thing of all was finding somewhere to upload everything. Most towns have internet access - but having the ability to FTP/upload webpage data was something entirely different! We resorted to 3 1/2" disks and ran around town looking for internet access allowing FTP access - a hard and time consuming task!!

I agree witht the bloggeridea - much easier - most of the hard setup work has already been done!

The broadband card will help - but it is expensive - and you will most likely find that it coverage may not be all that good once you get more remote.

-my 2 cents

I'm in the web game and I try to recommend to our customers that want to update their websites themselves to use CMS (Content management systems)

Most have modules that you enable or disable depending what you want on the site.
(Modules such as forums, FAQ, contact us, weblinks ect.)

They have a administration area to log in from any computer to make changes.
With passwords and usernames of course.

A good one is CPGnuke it has photo gallery built in, its fast and secure.

A good hosting facility should have a list of CMS available for use in the hosting space.

If you have any problems let me know

Cheers

The easiest is to setup an account on www.geocities.com and use their Wizard. Couldn't be easier.

Just use Windows Notepad. If its a simple site, then thats all you really need. No need for any extra software.

If you want something simple, try Homesite 5.5 (or what they are up to now)..
