I recently bought some used LT265/70R16 BF Goodrich All-Terrains, and am getting two of them fitted to the vehicle tomorrow along with a new pair. The ones I bought are made in Japan, have all-black lettering on both sides, and a speed rating of Q (I think the load rating is a dual one - 114/117). Anyway, just looking at the BF Goodrich website, this size is now only shown with white lettering, and a load/speed rating of 117 S! When did the speed rating change? Not sure where the new ones are made, won't see them until tomorrow.

My current 265/75 BFG ATs are S-rated (bought them last year), but my first batch bought back on 2000 were only Q rated. Even bought the Nissan compliance sticker to cover the Q-rated tyres, now not needed.
I bought an unused BFG a while back, and it developed radial splits in the sidewalls. Was told that it was coz of its age. No comeback since it was not from a dealer.

Radial splits in the sidewalls - did they look like 1mm deep slices or cuts? One of the used ones I bought has these, I was going to bin it.

There were a whole series of them on both sidewalls, about 3cm long, running at the same angle (not at right angles), a couple of mm deep, like they had been run flat (which they never had). The inside of the walls was fine. Was ok when I bought them, as the tyre had never been on road before, just developed later at about 20,000k.

I've had my BFG AT's on for over 7 years now and there is no
sign of any radial cracking at all. They all look good, so I doubt it is age that is the culprit. They are 265/75/16 and have a load rating of 120/116 and are Q rated.

Hmmmm wonder if they were run at a low pressure for an extended period or something.

Scubaroo,
Yeh it looked like they had been run flat, but no, never run them less than about 16psi on sand, and then not for long. Otherwise run at normal pressures. The other tyres were fine - they would have exhibited the same problem if run at low pressures.
All a mystery......

Sounds like the same thing - there's only a couple on this tyre on one sidewall, but they "radiate" from the centre of the tyre on the outside of the sidewall. Inside the tyre looks fine.
Will have to keep an eye on the ones I get fitted.

My second set of BFG's are about 12 months old - 245/70 - 16 .... load range D - made in the USA - 113/110 S .......... the info may be of some use .....we have had nothing but joy from the BFG's on the Jack - now on the Campomatic too - not a flat over several years, but we do drive quite conservatively !
