For starters I usually have more than one map as often there is no one map that has it all. But if I had to go with one map it would be the QPA maps that I think are now available in the EO shop. There is an A4 maps and tracks of western australia or they are available in traditional sheet maps. They show the majority of not only roads but also secondary and Tertiary tracks as well. I recently bought a Hema great desert tracks map, And while this was great for the main desert tracks it was not a patch on the QPA maps for showing other tracks with even major 4wd tracks like the cave Hill Woodlines being omitted

Hi Davoe and Dagoboy,

We certainly do have the QPA maps available.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about these or any other products in the shop.

I am moving to Perth in January (the UK weather finally got to me) and wonder what the best digital maps of WA and Perth are, for use with OziExplorer. I already have the natmap 1:25K series, and the sat photo maps. I need Perth street directory scale, and maybe South West at about 1:100k

Any recomendations?

For Perth, the StreetExpress is a beauty.

For other regions, I would not be limiting myself to just one map set as the state is so big.

For a state overview, you could use Dooghans or The one found here ( Calibration File is here)

For more detail, The Raster 250K maps are very good.

There's not much at 1:100K unless you scan them in yourself.

At 1:50K there is South West WA and the Kimberley maps set is not far from being published.

Apart from that, there are a few maps of different regions floating around and GDT (of course).

To compliment Pluto's comprehensive listing there is also Westprints Outback Tracks CD which I recently purchased from the exploroz shop. The maps included have a similar coverage to the Hema Great Desert Tracks Maps and cover a part of WA (in addition to other states). I have not determined if they are better than the Hema GDT maps - but you can never have enough maps - well thats what I tell the boss anyway.

Sorry, I'm a low tech kind. Off road- If it can break it will!! I stay away from pwer windows and door locks. I like a handheld GPS, but I like using a compass and plotting stuff on paper with a good topographic map.

If you're used to TomTom then Destinator is about the best alternative in Australia, the coverage for tracks and roads is pretty good. Then use Ozi with Natmaps (1:250k is best for all WA, check previous posts, you can download them for free now from the GOV website). There are some 1:50k ones but I believe they don't have full coverage for WA.

I was speaking to a bloke at the 4wd show in Perth this weekend and he says his boss was just in NewZealand meeting up with a few other map suppliers trying to find a private solution to the current lack of really good update mapping in WA.

(oh yeah sorry Dagoboy, this is directed to bgreeni)

I only have streetsmart 2002 (an an older version) ..so I am assuming it is still the same. On the 2002 CD the images are jpg - they do not have OziExplorer calibration files but the have "world files" (*.jpw) which are the calibration files used by the streetsmart program (and others such as ArcView). Anyway, because OziExplorer is so good it has a facility for importing this imformation and making OziExplorer calibration files - use the FILE - IMPORT MAP - ALL DRG MAPS ON A CD OR IN FOLDER...and away you go. Some people in the past have not known about this function and have manually calibrated all the maps ...painful.
Have fun

t0me (WA) - yes 50K maps are not avaiable for all of WA (in paper or digital form). The currently available digital coverage is restricted to the parts of the South West from Lancelin to east of Esperance (excluding Perth metro area and Bussselton/Dunsborough). Kimberley DVD will be out just before Christmas (438 maps of all Kimberleys at 50K scale). Pilbara will be out next year (late). You can also buy 100K topo maps in digital from a mob called Maptrax. Dont know who you were speaking to at the show or their intentions ..but even if they do nothing map availability is improving anyway.

It should be noted that the state Government have moved a bit away from making 25k and 50K maps (as far as I can see) - the data used to create the maps is generally available in vector format for purchase (not cheap) so people can make their own maps (using GIS programs) of specific areas (principally used by mining and developers I guess). It is also this data that is used by people such as Magellan (through PSMA) and Quality Publishing to make their products.
Cheers

bgreeni,

The StreetExpress 2005 & 2006 are in ECW format. So, you can import them into OziExplorer and they will calibrate themselves.

As mentioned - The current (2005 amd 2006) Perth streetsmart directories are in ECW format - Self calibrating in Ozi Explorer
