evening all
well the nissan 4.2 diesel turned over 100000ks yesterday morning touch wood no major concerns at this point only on 2nd set of tyres due for newbies after christmas up to 58000 on this set
probably towed van for about 40000 of these ks including using 5th gear not trying to jinx myself but i believe if you drive to conditions and dont overload gearbox there should be no problems
will also change disc pads before christmas still some left but bettere sure than stuffing up the disc rotors try to use gears to brake with as well as using brakes and loaded with my tools etc for work it returns me a bout 7kpl

steve
ps it goes in before christmas for 3" exhaust and a turbo tickle

Hey Steve - you should get another 2 or 3 or 4 hundred thou kays out of Patrol without problems with any luck. My 1998 2.8 GU now has 180000km on it and I still haven't had to spend anything on it except for routine maintenance. It's still got the original brake pads in as well and they are only about half worn.

Cheers

Sounds like Pete has had a better run than me with his 2.8. Gearbox failure due to hardfacing on shaft deteriorating and also rebuilt a motor due to overheating. Dumped all of the coolant through a small coolant hose near the oil filter burst. It convinced me to fit a low coolant alarm. Cars good now....but wish it was a 4.2.

Im a bit envious of both Michael and Coyote now. With my 2.8 done 125000 (10,000 since the rebuild) it should be good for another 180,000 I hope. My main dilema is the $35,000.00 or so changeover price to get a new 4.2. Options are spend the money - you cant take it with you, trade to a second hand 4.2 - unknown history + abuse...; or hang in there with what Ive got. Hills are no problem in the Kimberley, but more power low down and better reliability would be good. Mmmm, more power....chip, exhaust, gas fumigation etc - more $ out of the budget. I see someone on ebay is selling a 3.0 engine for they replaced it with a 4.2, maybe I should wait until the 2.8 and gearbox get a bit tired & replace them. Or a chevy deisel? No matter wich way you look at cars there is a comprimise, and they all cost money. wish there was a 100 series body and engine on a patrol chasis and running gear, then I'd be getting somewhere!

Cant complain about my 1991 3.0 petrol/ LPG Patrol either (owned from new).
287,000 km and uses no oil and no sign of smoke. Must be good for another 50k I would think. Lots of family holidays ,camping and caravan towing. They are a tough truck and it has never left us stranded . Pity the early promising 3.0TD has let the side down a bit. Everyone said that was the better bet over the 4.2TD (on paper) Not now. You wonder how such costly things can happen without being sorted out in testing. Perhaps they should do more testing down under - going around the block 10 times with a van on the back and driven by explore oz members (paid and fuelled of course!!) Happy Touring

Steve,
Ya baby's still in nappies mate,
She aint even learned how to walk. my first GQ 4.2 clocked 600,000 and not a problem with it ever. Sorry i sold it now, would have been handy for weekend fun. Anyway...dont worry about the 5th gear stuff. Ya wont damage the box towing in 5th mate. You know how to drive the thing so 5th gear will still be there when she turns 200,000.

Happy Birthday GU !!!

Simon,

A 4.2 that bleep itself !! Sad to hear but do you mind if I ask, was there a simple reason why it bleep itself? From the 9k expense you are talking about I presume it is way out of time warranty (way more than 3yr old).
Thanks for any light you may be able to shed as it may give early warning signs to those who keep an eye or ear out for similar symptoms.

Regards Trevor.

Hi Trevor
The nissan is a 2000 model with after market turbo intercooler with 3" mandel bent exhaust the car was from binskins 4wd in nsw it was the owners wifes car which i purchased when it was around 2 years old.
I was in the process of driving to tannum sands in qld from newcastle when the engine dropped its bundle just out of bundaberg.
It gave no indication that anything was wrong it hadnt missed a beat i was driving up a hill at around 3000rpm temp gauge was normal and it made a moderate mechanical noise (not quite a bang) and stalled.
It was all over after that when engine was restarted it had a major miss but was still drivable if you didnt mind a lot of smoke.
The engine cracked nm 5 piston, the head after testing showed 5 cracks
Pump and injectors tested- pump ok, injectors were all over the shop between 120-150.
so around $$$9k later and a full rebuild it will be no the road again next week.
There was no ultimate place we could point the finger at for the failure apart from it looks like the engine was possibly overheated early on in its life before a purchased it, hence the cracks in the head.

Simon,

That's a real shame, made more frustrating cause it's still only young (135K). I just hope it's all sorted now and you have no more hassles for quite a while.
Are you from Pt Macquarie way?. My brother-in-law, whom we visit regularly, bought his GQ from Binskins and is a local down there.
Anyway thanks for the info, but no warning signs makes it hard for me to listen for the same signs if something was to go wrong with mine.

Cheers Trevor.

Simon,
I actually saw that vehicle of yours in Sept 2002 when I was there at Binskins and had new suspension fitted. It was Glen who showed/told me that a GU with stronger suspension doesn't need it's sway bars anymore. He'd lifted it about 4" and removed the swaybars, but that was about it apart from a 3" mandrel bent exhaust (from memory).
Sorry to read that yours blew up....makes me a bit worried about what mine might do!!!
All the best and hope it's all good once you get it back.
Cheers

My 2000 3.00 TDI has clocked up 165000 so far, most of it towing a van around.

Did have the gearbox rebuilt early on but tow in 4th unless on really flat tar. Chenge oil every 5000 and used Castrol Magnatec until Nissan bought out their new oil

Going better than ever. Was going to trade it but I might keep it and see how far she'll go.

Hi Steve and Denny

My old bus has 304 on the clock now and is still running sweetly. It is a bit sluggish on hills, but who is in a hurry? lol

Steve,

Happy b'day to the truck...
As someone else said expect plenty more of these if it is treated right, I'm up to 235/240 000km now. With only the overheating trouble throughout the whole time I've had mine, being the only concern for me. Rear brake pads are still original but like you I use the gears alot as well, I'm closer to 5k/lt with economy but that has a lot to do with my driving conditions (lots of heavy towing at high speed).
You won't know yourself after the work is done regarding the exhaust and turbo tickle, WAHOOO !
Cheers mate glad to hear all is going well and here's to another couple of hundred.
Regards Trevor.

G'day Steve,

It's a nice feeling to finally see that there is a "1" on the screen after you've done the first 99,999klm, eh? hehehe

Like Trevor said, the new enhancements you're planning should be great. I had a 3" mandrel-bent exhaust system fitted up as my first engine enhancement (apart from the blokes at Berrima doing a tune up around 20,000klm, which unleashed quite a few extra ponies just on it's own).

The new exhaust alone seemed to improve low-down grunt.

More recently I have had a bigger Schwitzer turbo fitted by Berri Diesel Service (agent for Denco of Wagga Wagga). That has really made a difference.

I know you can have the MTQ bore-out job done and the bigger turbine wheel inserted, but I think (my personal opinion only) that for approx the same $$$ you'd be better off with the bigger turbo..........

Cheers mate and hope you can get to see a "5" or maybe even a "9" where that "1" has just popped up (in due course).

Roachie

Hi Roachie,

Did you bother taking the extra warranty for your 4x4 or just stick with the 3 year/100k??

G'day mate,

No didn't bother with the extended warranty......only had 2 services done by Nissan during the vehicle's whole life anyway....(the 1st one which is free and one done at about 80,000klm when I didn't have any of my tools etc after having moved here from NSW. That was the one when they discovered my 5th cog was about to let go and were kind-enough to tell me and volunteered to change it under warranty.

I did all the other services myself, so wouldn't have fancied my chances getting anything major done by them under the extended warranty. In hindsight I'm glad I saved the $900- they wanted for it as nothing has gone wrong.

Cheers

Roachie
