At least thats what a seven year old told me.

I was at a job this morning, when the lady of the house came out to take the kids to school. I here this "WOW! Look at their truck It's waaaaaaaaaaaay cooler than ours!

I turn around to see this clever little lad staring google eyed at my beat up 88 Nissan Patrol with panel damage here and there like its the best thing he's ever seen. Mum was looking up with a bit of a frown on her face and sitting in the drive way was a brand new BMW X5

Made my day!

Well.......I believe that the young tell it like it really is!

They openly express their "desires", whereas most adults seem to suppress them, and "give-in" to peer pressure!

Hence the rise of the likes of the X5 and ML series!!

*sigh*

Nobody in their right mind would actually want something so utterly useless as an X5 or ML, but we 'need' to have one, because the 'bloke next door' has one.

I give that kid another 5 years before he turns to the dark side, and his "Toorak" mates all start dreaming of V12 Lambourghini 4WD's (with a lot of encouragement from Mammah and Pappah).

the main reason the soft roader bmw's and mercs are popular is because of the pricing and the fact they dodge most of the import tarrifs because they are 4wd.

reading a comparison a while back between the x5 and a merc sedan with the same equiptment levels and motor etc. The x5 was about 50 grand cheaper, thats why they are popular, its a "cheap" way for the yuppies to get their bums into a merc.

But i did drive along next to a black v8 x5 the other month in the city, it had an aftermarket exhaust (remus i think) with quad rear pipes, and it sounded grouse.

Bradley, I think you have a little over emphasized the tariff on imported cars and the consequence of it. I refer you to the article on the NRMA site where it talks about the drop from 15% to 10% from the 1st of January last. It actually is negligible in comparison to the figures you mention. Have you added a "0" to the number?

The importers are adding the tariff to the wholesale price to then add the Australian end margins. Then of course they add other margins to maintain some exclusivity and the like.

It always amuses me when people put 5hit on expensive cars and call then "utterly useless" and so on, I reckon if all cars cost the same amount a few more of those utterly useless cars would be in our driveways.

John, yes i agree that the tarrif drop across the board was negligible, but i'm referring to the concessions that are in place for 4wd versus passenger sedans etc.

these are the same concessions that the "scrubies" of the world want to get rid of to try and discourage the toorack tractor set.

Browny, mate the black x5 i saw can park itsself in my driveway anytime :-)))))

My mate traded in his 100 series cruiser for an X5 4 months ago. He recons its awsome in every way, problem is.....he wont go offroad no more cause he too scared to damage it. So now i have a happy mate driving his X5, but lost me a good companion offroad. Those r the breaks !!!
