Was following an almost new Patrol in a 100 zone today when all of a sudden there was smoke galore and the smell of oil. I thought the newies were meant to be goodens? Unfortunatley traffic did not allow me to pull over and help so i am just assuming it was a 3.0. Would be a warranty job in any case.

Wouldn't of happened to, and therefore he should have bought a JEEP in the first place.

We had a little protest today down at our club's football (ie soccer) ground over Markets trucks going on the pitch. One of those offenders was a pretty brand new 3.0 GU. All i could think was "what an ... and i hope what forumites say happens to 3.0 GU's happens to yours very soon".

was reading a previous post on how nissan had sorted out the 3 litre diesel problems with the 3rd series patrols and thought
well its about time.
that was until today. was talking to a bloke who has a series 3 and his just blew up. not a happy man. anyway he knows a few of the nissan dealerships here in gippsland and 2 admitted to him that they have each had to replace 5 and 15 engines each from series 3 nissans in recent times.
personally if i was buying a diesel nissan it would be the big diesel engine. it seems bullet proof. the smaller 3 litre just doesnt seem to be able to cope with the requirements of the patrol.
i am not bagging nissan in general just the 3 litre engine. too many problems for my liking. same way i wouldnt go near certain toyota series and years or discoveries or jeeps or any make and model of vehicle that has a less than spectacular history. just goes to show that research, research and more research is the key. buyer beware.

Peter,
I said they had replaced 5 & 15 engines but from various series. You remarked that the new ones are fine including the Navara. What do you think now!

i think i still wouldnt buy a patrol with a 3 litre. reports of the newer engines blowing up dont seem to be anywhere near as prevalent than the pre series 3 engines. still time will tell. get a few more k's into them and see what happens.
sorry about miss quoting you on the rebuilt types. still too many if you ask me for an area with the
population of gippsland.
still cant figure out why it seems to be mainly a problem with patrols and not navara.
well from what i have read and seen anyway. no doubt if there are navara owners out there with blown engines they will let us know.
still go the diesel troopies and rockies.

Interesting fact about the 3 litre. It is actually from the UD 7 tonne truck. Obviously there is something that has been changed but fundamentally a good solid engine. It is always amusing to read the "It is too small for the vehicle" opinions you often hear.

hehe... you can get a watch-sprung toy to pull 7 tonnes no problem.... if you have the gearing (and don't worry too much about the speed - or lack of it) :)

A 7 tonne UD truck using a 3 litre 4 cylinder engine???????
Don't think so, even the smallest UD has a 6 cylinder.

Story I heard was that it was out of Renault Light Commercials in Europe, supposedly proven. Some quite big trucks run 4 Cyl though, up to 8.5T in Isuzu's and they are the most popular in OZ.

Just did a quick Google, it appears the ZD30 is in fact a Nissan engine but is supplied to Renault and fitted to Master series commercial vans. Several articles refer to it specifically as supplied by Nissan under the technology sharing arrangements. Other Renault supplied items are also specifically mentioned.

I could have it wrong, but my advice is that it is a Renault design, manufactured by Nissan and supplied back to Renault, thats the technology sharing bit. We design, you build.

Here is one of the links, there are others which say basically the same thing. in all cases it is referenced as the Nissan engine supplied to Renault. There is no mention of it being designed by Renault, but that's not to say it's not the case.

Read somewhere that shortly after Nissan closed the North Clayton plant in
Melbourne they got into a lot of financial difficulty...seems the Nissan is now a wholely owned subsidiary of Renault ...if this is so then it is simply one part of the company selling engines to the other part...slight of hand for accountants really to make the books look good.
But I wonder if the engine is a bad as some are making it out to be...there are at least 4 3.0ltr patrols in my club and none have had these problems that I'm aware of.....and btw my even small 6 cyl 2.8 GU is still going strong after 180000km and no money spent on mechanicals other that regular servicing....wonder why they didn't do a bit of work to this motor instead of changing to 4cyl 3.0ltr>>>

sorry, right you are it is a 4 cyclinder but it is a vastly different engine to the Nissan 3.0. It is massive by comparison and for those who compare oil capacity of the old 3.0 with the new 3.0, compare te UD with its 14 litre sump
