G'day All
Back at work again, so back online. In my week off I was talking to a panel beater about the modern wash bays (the ones with the foaming brush and high pressure
water gun) and his reccommendation was not to use them on modern car paint jobs. According to this guy the pressure on some of them is enough to strip away the clear coat on the two layer metalic paint jobs. I use these wash bays on a regualr basis (at least once every couple of months) and am now a bit worried about this. Has anyone out there had any bad experiences of their paintwork being stripped away by high pressure washers?

Howdy,
I also have a bit of a concern about high pressure washers; underneath the car. It's a big no-no to aim one at the wheel bearings on a motorcycle because it can blast out the grease. Does anyone one know if there are locations under a 4WD where one shouldn't blast? How about universal joints, can they take a high pressure blast without losing grease?
I have spent ages going back and
forth in one of those underneath blasting bays after coming off Fraser Island. Should I have a lube straight after?
Cheers Frank.

The car lovers dont seem overly powerfull but there is a rip snorter at work that rips the paint off the work ute tray. Personally i usually use the car lovers spray gun to get rid of underbody mud and tdo the rest with wash and wax and hose

Havin helped out at a panelbeaters on a regular basis, and questioned them lon and numerously, I can say this.
The paint on thecar is cured by chemicalreaction, using what's called a reducing agent. Once it goes hard - about an hour in summer - It is HARD.
Use to et the leftover stuff in the mixing container and bounce it all round the workshop.
Modern paint is a 2 pak - 50% colour, 50% reducer
Older cars, 91 Falcon, used a 2 part cobra or Clear On Base brand paint
The painter then buffs it with a cutting compound. This stuff goes everywhere. Just about all the cracks and crannies have this creme compound in it.
loves getting under the rubber moulds.
The only way to remove it is with a pressure cleaner.A very high pressure cleaner.
Was told the only way it will lift the paint is if it has been corroded (bird bleep etc) and the seal is broken. moisture gets in and lifts the paint from the metal.
the pressure cleaner then peels it away.
All the cars at this panel beater are cleaned using a high pressure hose before being returned to customer. never heard or seen a problem yet. except the 76 red toyota that it peeled the old paint off (Customer got her bonnet repainted for free).
Under the car, I don't know. In the engine bay had to watch out forthe ignition components.
Techie.

I just borrowed my brother's HP washer for a try out on the Cruiser. They're OK for getting the red mud off underneath, but I wouldn't bother using it again on the paintwork. I was careful not to get too close to the paintwork but it still managed to life part of the "4200 electronic turbo diesel" decal off the rear quarter.
Plus it was still so patchy that I had to go over the bodywork again with a hose and sponge. Not worth the effort, IMHO
I won't be buying one.

The trick with these is to use the soap functions. Do a pressure rinse to get the worst off then time it to spray the soap on and let it soak. Only needs a couple of minutes to do the job. The clean off and follow up with
the spot free rinse if you want it to look like you spent an hour using the chamois!

if you have rust proofing sprayed under the vehicle, do not use high pressure as this will rip it straight off. col
