I am fairly sure that the Hyland offroad coupling incorporates a 50mm ball, but I am not sure as to your reasoning that it will be easier to use.
The Orac coupling is simple & easy to use.

Brett, I have an AT35 hitch made by Vehicle Components on my off road boat trailer. If you are going to do serious off roading, this hitch is one of the best( if not the best) available. It is different to a 50mm ball but is fully articulated. You can get them braked if required.

Have a hyland on our Kanga camper. Works well.

We too have recently fitted the AT35 to our caravan. We were replacing an older hitch with similar movement; ideal for sharp dips and crests. We have travelled on some tracks where a ball hitch would not have had sufficient movement. I have heard of someone with this type of hitch on a camper trailer having the trailer turn over full 360 degrees and right itself when they were in the NW. A ball hitch could have taken the car with it. Vehicle components also make a 'conical hitch', which is a ball type fitting. You can look at their website -

http://www.vehiclecomponents.com.au/content/contentdetails.asp

They sent it across to us by post i think (may have been by courier).

G'day Brett,

IMHO, they don't come any more "decent" than the Hyland coupling as far as off-road-ability is concerned (fully articulating fore-and-aft, & 360deg. lateral swivel), and AFAIK it's the only OFF-ROAD coupling that utilises the 50mm ball...

For more info, give Darren Hyland (the manufacturer) a call on (07) 3200 6261

I agree, Darren makes a good hitch and he is in Beenleigh. The beauty is you can keep your towball on your car and don't have to change anything if you want to tow another trailer. It does everything the others do but using the 50mm ball. Very smart setup.

Yeah, pity he didn't go through with that....(maybe got too busy???)

Though these couplings appear to be gaining quite a following, it seems that there are still plenty of folk who have no idea what they look like or how they work, and a website would be the logical way to rectify this...

It would seem that word-of-mouth (free) advertising is keeping him as busy as he wants to be....

Funny.... I spoke to Darryl about 12 month ago and said the same thing" you need a webpage mate" I offered him a free page on our web-page www.aussieteardrops.com but he said he is so busy he doesn't wont more work. There is a few off road trailer builders out there who use his hitch as standart and that seems to be enough for him. Why not.... maybe he doesn't want to work seven days a week and enjoys life on weekends with his 4WD and goes camping. Sounds smart to me :-)
cheers

For a summary of hitches look at

http://www.campertrailers.org/couplings.htm

found it useful when I was trying to work out the different models.

Seen Hyland hitch and looks good if you must stay with ball.

Ball couplings tend to be noisier than hitches like Treg.

Hi Brett
I have used a Treg coupling the past 10 plus yrs on all my trailers both on and off road they have never let me down have ample articulation in all directions the big advantage is there is no metal to metal contact with neoprene block, unlike a 50mm ball coupling great when travelling 1000's of corrugations
we have travelled in plenty of off road situations ie washaways, steep banks creek crossings, etc, never had a problem, I use them on a daily basis with my work trailer, Neoprene block wear rate is hardly noticable
just my experiance
Cheers
Barry
