Hi. I have an 93 td 80 series cruiser,Ive just been on a trip fraser island and all of the dash warning lights have been flickering on and off.The car is running fine, so it doesnt seem to effect it. Im just wondering if anyone else out there has come across the same problem and might have any ideas on what it might be. Cheers.

I have had a similar problem on my 100 series - apparently the problem is with alternator connections.

Have a look on LCOOL http://www.safari4x4.com.au/80scool/tech/dash_lights.html

Have to agree with Trekie. Get your car to an auto elec who will fix the problem. This is a reasonable well known fault, so any auto elec should know about it.

this applies to the 75 series too, on mine the connector at the side of the alternator was rubbing on something and caused the lights to go funny. Took a while to find it :-)

Pull the connection off the back of the alternator, give it a really good clean out on both sides. Close up the gaps in the female side, (the plastic plug) and plug it back in, that should fix it. It's a common problem on the diesel 80 and 100's.

Thanks for the help.It seems pretty well that it could be the terminals on the alternator, i"ll clean them up and tighten all the connections and see how we go
cheers.

Another thing to do whilst there, release the alt cable from the body clamp closest to the alt.....

Was up at Mt stirling with some Forum members on Cup day weekend in the Troopy and every time I went through water the whole dash including the timing belt light came on.

As Bonz ihas been itching to tell everyone - 'it was lit up like a x-mas tree' .

Anyway it still kept running like a dream and approx 30 secs later the lights all turned off and it was ok (I think so anyway)

The first time I nearly 'poofed' the pants however after the third and fourth time I just ignored it.

I do agree that it is some electrical multi plug thingy somewhere near the alternator that is getting a guts full of water, dirt etc etc etc that is the cause and in view of the above I'll try and find that plug you guys are talking about and check it out.

Only problem being - After market turbo, Endles Air and ARB locker compressor are all fitted/tucked away down ' in there' now , so tight that a slimy slug would have trouble squeezing through.

Hi Marty, I had the same problem with my 80 (91 model TD) when i bought it. The wires between the alternator plug and the body are too short and the motor vibration constantly pulls at the wires and plug. Pulling out the plug and cleaning/squeesing the contacts is only a temporary fix. The previous owner before me had taken it several times to auto electricians, but apparently it would only last 10 - 20k kms. I extended the cables (joining in extra piece) and fixed them to the body of the alternator so there is no movement on the plug. Since then i've done around 40k kms with no probs. My recommendation is to get your auto elect. to extend the wires so the plug is not pulling (if not tackling this yourself).

ps - car will run fine for a while, but the alternator gradually reduce the rate of charge with the lights flickering.

Twigiee.
