I just had moment of clarity... a monent of knowledge... a moment of ying and yang between my mind and my heart...
I just realised that Australian 4wd Monthly is really $hit.,..
I was at the newsagents gonna buy the lateset mag, when I realised that I hadn't even finsihed reading the last one...
Their so called product tests (adversiting badly hidden) and Custom Trucks leave a lot to be desired...
Now 377 pages, with only 294 of them ADS!
I read a competiting one on the latest Hilux they took up the
York, and other stories, and it was actually an interesting read...!!!
Sure 4wd monthly has the occassional good yarn, and a bit of info that I wouldn;'t mind paying for, but filtering through all the garbage isn't worth it!!!
So there we go... I'm converted, and my wallett thanks me for it...
Cheerio

I tend to agree.
They advertise on their website that they support tread lightly, but from what I seen, they only pay it lip service. A lot of their articles read like they feel they have to ‘dumb it down’ for the readership, which I find a little insulting. Roothy can write an interesting story, he doesn’t have to carry on about how much bleep they put away whist doing it.
I still buy it every few months when I have read everything else and I need something to pass a few hours on a plane and always kick myself afterwards.

I would agree...Roothey can write a good yarn...
He wrote the trip notes on the Granville - trial Harour Tk which were both informative and interesting.
I compare it to the latest 4x4 Australia where they discuss nearly every challenging
creek crossing up the OTL.
When 4wd monthly did it... they were too busy pushing difflocks and OME
suspension to talk about
creek crossings or much else....
Again Roothy has the most valuable info. with the servicing while en-route... Probably coz no one will sposnor that section!
Ads are fine... in fact impotant... but less ads means more cutthrough...and respect for the advertiser...
Cheers

I have to agree as
well, the only mag I buy now that worthy of my hard earned is Western 4wdriver, it is locally produced W.A mag that comes out quarterly. Full of good honest info and stories. They have also put out trip note mags, Days out of
Perth, Weekends out of
Perth, Days on the south coast of W.A plus a couple more. Great value from $10.95 to $15.95.

Best time to buy many such magazines (not only 4WD but others) is when you're in the market for accessories or something, and you want to look at the ads. Even then, most advertising contracts are for 12 month runs, so if you bought one only every 6 months, you wouldn't miss much in way of advertising.

I agree. I have been subscribing for about 3 years now and its due for renewal, but unless they offer me a really good deal, I won't be renewing. A lot of their articles are an insult to the average persons intelligence. SKP

Lost the plot a few years back.
And a member of tread softly who are they kidding.
I just got the February 2009 issue still the same thing.
Stick to overlander and 4x4 Australia.
all the best

I agree too,
I was in the market for the staun deflators, was ready to buy some when it was posted in here that they were a free give away if I signed up for 10 issues....so I did. Basically payed for my staun's and got 10 issues for free.
But the mag is not the best in the fairdinkum department. Bloody adds area joke. Its true that you get around 300 pages and most are ads. I wont be getting any more. UNLESS...another great offer comes along.

Worst thing is that it's glossy paper; maybe if they printed on tissue paper it could be easilly recycled.

Now everyones bagged the crap out of it admit you all regulary buy it ---- Go on ADMIT I buy heaps of mags although i couldnt care less what happens to most of them except for Western Angler (although this has gone down
hill and western 4wder. a good mag getting around at the moment is (I think) outdoors WA Rumoured to be going all glossy next issue
seriosly though the national mags seem to be covering more and more Camper trailors, soft roaders, Rock crawlers and 4wd comps each to their own but im not really interested ---- But I buy em anyway
