Can anyone tell me if extractors do anything apart from make your 4wd sound like a truck?
Thinking bout having some fitted to my 1HZ '94 landcruiser ute.

Don't waste you dough on them, just fit a turbo. 96 kw to 136kw and torque 290 nm to 385 nm. makes a huge difference to a strong donk.

If you fit extractors, it doesn't have to sound like a truck. With a 2 1/2 inch system and sensible mufflers, it might be a bit louder, but not that much. Anything bigger than 2 1/2 inch and they get noisy. All up, a modest improvement for a modest cost. My 1HZ 100 is now a bit sweeter with no hole in the torque curve at 2200rpm, and no worries about potential turbo problems.

Yep aggree with you there, fitted to the hilux 2 1/2 extractors plus exhaust on the 2.8 which needs as much help as it can get without the exspence of a turbo(obviously a turbo will make a big diff) but if you want to cough up say 3k for a turbo compared to up to 1k tops for an inprovement through an exhaust. My'n definately has made anoticeable difference when pulling up the hills compared to when I had the standard exhaust. Top speed makes no diff with
mine just pulls better as I said 2.8 needs as much help as you can give it but will sit on 100/110 klms all day no probs as before 110 seem to be pushing it prior to the exhaust that's what I found with the hilux anyway. Regards Steve M

i have an additional question to Brian in diesel extractors. i read that extractors on diesels are less effective because the compression of the diesel means back pressure is not as impacting. of course the extractor guy said they are like "a extra gear" what ever that means and they work better on diesels than petrols. he recons better economy and power cause the stock systems are all blocked up. can someone set all this striaght?? thanks.

It depends who you talk to.
I had extractors and a new exhaust fitted to an FJ62 and bottom end power was a little better, motor ran slightly cooler, didn't notice any difference in fuel use but I don't count kilometers per litre, I just check how many KLM per
tank to keep an eye on things. If I had my time over I would do it again.
My brother went to an exhaust place in Myaree (
Perth) with his HJ62 needing the rear half of his exhaust replaced, and they pestered him to fit extractors and a 2&3/4" system. He said many times all he wanted was the exhaust repairs but they kept at him.
In the end they said he could have it for free if it didn't give him more power + more torque + better fuel economy, so he agreed. Before and after results of dyno test showed NO improvement in power or torque so he drove away without paying and never went back.

Be careful about fitting a turbo to an old 1hz motor, the bearings can't handle the extra power at times, common problem with the 1hz motor. Extractors don't have to make it sound like a truck, my brother just fitted a set of pacemakers to his 97 75 series 1hz diesel ute and it sounds great 3 inch the whole way through. Plus he got his fule pump rebuilt and modified, plus he put on a
snorkel and a K&N air cleaner. Talk about extra power it is amazing how much better it goes. Extractors work
well when you get clean cool air though a
snorkel and washable air cleaner into the motor. in other words if you don't have a
snorkel fit one at the same time that you put the extractors on, you will be amazed at the difference.
