How do I stop my horn from dying every year! I have one of those standard round disc horns - and after a year of 4x4ing they keep giving up the ghost!

Does anyone know of a waterproof / weather proof horn on the market? I've tried air horns - they are worse than ever - stopping dead as soon as any water/mud gets near them!

Am I the only one having this issue?

Must admit I've never had the problem. How about sticking it in a plastic bag??
Won't stop the noise and I can't imagine it overheating.

Cheers

I think you are sadly...
I have Air Horns fitted under drivers gront guard, those of you who know me...know i live in river crossings and mud, These air horns have been on my first GQ before i moved em onto this GQ. never had a prob, and just after i read ur post, I went out and ran a wire to the original horn and she still works too.

Then again, really depends what ya get up too, you might make me look dry when it comes to playing in water.

Air horns hate bulldust ! Mine died years ago in a sudden unexpected drop into the fine white stuff, never bothered replacing them with more of the same.

My first inclination was to recommend viagra!!!!! hehehe

Really though, I have a set of air horns mounted on my roof rack. Not the usual $50- jobbies from repco with the little compressor that spins up only when you press the horn button. These are "proper" air horns that require a receiver tank with up to 100psi on tap at all times. The air pressure is constantly in the pipeline from the compressor and air tanks (located in the cargo area of the patrol), right up to the air horns. There is a solenoid on the back of each trumpet and when I hit the horn button, the solenoid opens the valve and there is instantly a very loud response.

the air is also constantly monitored by a gauge on my "A" pillar....it also goes to outlets on the bullbar, and at the rear (for tyre inflation etc), as well as being instantly available for my front ARB locker too. All this is done with various "T" pieces in the festo tubing.......too easy. BTW: the original 2 horns still work too.

I've always had the same problem with standard horns, I now have air horns running both of an electric motor (std cheapy type) plus air horns running off the air tank. The air tank you'll never have a problem with as it blasts any crap stuck in their straight out, but with the cheapy ones the trick is to mount the relay up nice and high away from the moisture and ALWAYS point the trumpet facing DOWNWARDS. I also squirt silicone all over the relay, if it dies, just cut the wires, re-crimp and whack another in. Once you've had a day in the mud/water give them a good blast on the way home, it's fun and it dries them out and gets all the crap out of them before it has a chance to set too hard. If they do block up, disconnet the air line from the motor, put some ear muffs on (trust me don't forget that bit) and whack your air gun off the home garage compressor into the line and pull the trigger, you can even whack a bit of balistol oil or somthing down the trumpet first, then blow compressed air through it. It'll make a hell of a racket and they'll be as good as new.

PS If you don't have a compressor in your garage, just go and buy a GMC $99 one from bunnings, that's all I use and they have a million uses.
