Hyland Trailer Coupling

Just recently I purchased a second hand camper trailer with a Hyland coupling hitch. I knew the hitch was faulty when purchased but because the unit is not 12mths old I thought the warranty would cover it. Unfortunatly for me the dealers say warranty is not transferable.
The fault is, that it will only turn 90 deg one way and 0 deg the other .
Can this be repaired by me, or does someone know the where abouts of Hyland headquarters in Brisbane?

I can never understand why warranties aren't transferrable. Are they warrantying the product or the owner?

You could be listening to classic bull*^%$t from the dealer - a dealer who can't be bothered with the hassle. Maybe Hyland themselves will be more sympathetic. They either have a hitch that is good for 12 months at least (abuse and/or neglect by the first owner aside) or not ! Re that warranty - if Hyland give you the fob off, make sure you test it with consumer affairs in your state. You should end up with a repair at least, no cost, as reward for your persistence. Warranties are a crud area of marketing - things that everyone knows last for years often have a 12 month warranty - why do we consumers put up with such rubbish ?(my freezer is 18 years old - never missed a beat). Extended warranties are offered at no extra cost for certain goods, but not for subsequent owners - why is this (as mentioned by others). It is true though that the maker has no "contract" re the sale etc with subsequent owners - but many offer it anyway................ support them where possible I say. BOL.

I was looking to change my std 50mm ball coupling on the camper to the hyland. I'm surprised that any hitch would/could have problems after only 12 mth - I think I should reconsider the hyland option and install a Treg coupling instead.

Indeed - looking at the Treg, its quite simple, fully functional and solid as a mountain to boot - and the most used probably.

I just picked up a fully optioned Camerons camper second hand with a treg and was a bit wary of it as so many people say it is hard to use. funny have not had any problems so far. Ok so you have to reverse the good acuracy but thats the only fault (normaly mine) i could find.

Wilko K,
Is the hitch faulty, or is it simply a lack of maintenance?
The hitch is fully greasable, & if this is not done regularly, then there is bound to be some "binding" as you have described... (just like any other mechanical device)...
Bit unfair to blame the hitch (and/or the manufacturer) for someone else's carelessness... Without seeing the hitch in question, I'd suggest a thorough clean out & re-grease may be all that's required to put it right...

Mine is 2y/o, & has been "across the middle" 3 times, incl. Hay R., CSR, Anne Beadell H/way & SD (& all points in between) without a hint of bother...

Darren Hyland can be contacted on (07) 3200 6261, & from all accounts he is very helpful....

Hi Wilko,

Make sure that you install a new ball onto your car to hold the hyland coupling.

As part of the sale of the coupling, hyland supply a 2 tonne rated ball, which has the bottom of the ball leveled off, to allow the hyland coupling to lock onto it.''

A standard ball will not lock the coupling. (I think)

Having said that, I think they are a great coupling, and would purchase another if I am looking at a new trailer.

Anyway, check with the supplier as outlined above.

Have an ARK stainless steel 3.5 tonne rated ball which I got from Supercheap for about $25. Works fine with my Hyland, you're right, the tow ball needs to be the right height for the hitch to work correctly without the hitch pivoting on the ball.
I had an earlier model Hyland on the camper with a shorter female coupling on it when we got it. Couldn't find the right length towball for it and found it noisy as it tilted forward and back on the ball (maybe this one needed the special tow ball you mention?). We upgraded to the later model hitch with the longer female coupling and with the ARK tow ball it works well, easy to connect and quiet in operation.

If you purchased the camper from a dealer and the hitch is faulty the dealer has to repair it, otherwise the trailer is not roadworthy and can't be registered.

Wilko,
That's good to know....

A few years ago, friends of ours (SWMBO's rellies, actually) who live on Brissies northside had one of the early versions (on a off-road van) & had some "issues" with it (can't remember what, exactly), rang Darren & he came to their place with a replacement (later version, which he fitted)...

I've not met or spoken to the bloke personally, but he does indeed sound like a Top Bloke!!
