We drove along this section of the coast, south from
Steep Point (as in the actual
sign saying most westernly point) in November of last year. Absolutely blew us away. A most sensational part of the Aussie coast. The track winds it way along the
cliff edge, sometimes coming as close as maybe 8 metres from sheer
cliff faces, straight down, rocks, raging surf! awesome. Very windy. You need to be careful on the track as the shifting sand has reclaimed parts of it and also created drifts with steep sides. A few times we were on some hairy angles. Glad we didn't have too much weight on top! We camped about 10 kms from
Steep point, on the right just after the caretakers house, in view of Dirk Hartog Island, still pretty windy, even on the lee side of the
hill. But I'm led to believe that in those parts, once the wind starts for the season, it doesn't stop blowing hard for months.
After visiting the most westernly point the next morning, we followed the track(s) southwards for hours in low 2nd and 3rd, but eventually ended up coming to a point
well south of
the blowholes (again a highlight) where we simply couldn't drive any further because the sand had completely eroded any track. Some parts of the area look as if they could be Saharan desert. Massive
sand dunes, no veg etc...
After driving all around Aus in 3 months, I would rate my favorite
places as, the whole of
Cape York, The
Kimberley, Hammersley Gorge (the most refreshing gorge we'd swum in, all others too hot). and The
Steep Point area.
Steep Point has everything, very remote, spectacular
views, great 4wdriving, a real adventure, and possibly, along with the road through Batavia Downs Station, the most bone jarring corrigations on the road in. Go there, it won't let you down.
