Hi everyone my father in law as just got a nissan patrol td42t 2002 we were wondering if anyone has done any up grading on the intake from the turbo as it looks quit small and restrictive.

JT....

Couple of options available; depending on what limit your credit card has!!!! ;-))

Firstly, just increasing the size of the intake pipe from turbo will not have any effect whatsoever....that air is under pressure from the turbo and the size of the tube (unless it was really tiny, like half an inch or something ridiculous) will make no difference.

The more notable restrictions are in the size of the exhaust system; especially the dump pipe.

If you're fair dinkum about getting the best out of the 4.2, here is what I've done:

* fitted a Denco turbo upgrade. In my case I'd already had a 3" mandrel bent exhaust system fitted with a custom-made dump pipe. The new turbo only went on about a month ago though....and the exhaust system had to be slightly modified so it joined up to the new turbo. The Denco kit is actually designed for the standard Patrol which has had no modifications done to it already.....as such, it includes a 3" exhaust set-up.

* another alternative is to get the MTQ upgrade. This involves having the turbo innards bored-out and enlarged, with a new turbine wheel fitted etc. This also has a bigger exhaust fitted too.

Hope this helps.

jt,

As Roachie said above there is a couple of options with good results (as far as I'm concerned). Unlike Roachie, I went down the road of boreing out the internals of the existing turbo at MTQ I also have had the 3" exhaust and larger dump pipe fitted years ago (which is necessary for good results). This has given me solid performance and great torque but it has also aided (in my opinion) in reducing running temps as well.
Haveing followed (via this forum) what Roachie has done I think this would also be worth considering. Look up the archives to see some of his reasoning to go the way he did and you will find there is some very good logic in his eventual upgrade.
I have so far had no trouble with my upgrade and would recomend MTQ to you if that is the way your father in law decides to go. Approx 35000km travelled since my upgrade.

Cheers Trevor.

One of the big issues with these engine is the turbo dump housing - its way too small. See turbo dump housing pics

Fix the exhaust and the dump housing restrictions before you worry about the intake or playing with bosot.. This will also lower EGT's.
