I am no way connected to Manta Ray but always use them when I travel to FRASER Island via Rainbow Beach. The other barge is owned by Kingfisher Bay Resort. (mostly Japanese owned by Recruit Cosmos)

Manta Ray Barge News
dear valued customer, please take a moment to read this-

{YOUR CHOICE FOR THE FUTURE}

Thankyou for using the Manta Ray Barge today. We are an independent local family run business that has been operating for 5 years.

A number of retail outlets sell tickets for our competitors barges and they might try to tell you that you must have tickets in advance ... so they try to get all the cars before they get to the barge.

With MANTA RAY BARGE you don't need to pre-book or buy tickets in advance ... simply drive on and pay on our boat. If too many people are persuaded to buy tickets for the other barge or the other company before they reach us, Manta Ray Barge will no longer be able to offer you a choice.

So please remember the name MANTA RAY BARGE and tell your friends to come down to the barge and buy their ticket on the barge.

credit card facility now on board

I use them as well every time I go across to Fraser. You can imagine what will happen if Manta Ray goes broke ... the fees for the crossing will go through the roof. Stick with the locals.

The servo on the left on the way into Rainbowbeach is Kingfisher Bay owned.
(The servo further towards town on the right is not)

Eurong Beach Resort is owned by Kingfisher Bay
(Dilli, Happy Valley and Orchard Beach is not)

Can you all see whats going on here?

Hi every one, one of my mates and I were the first to use the Manaray barge when they came into business. They gave us stubby coolers and told us that they will always be competative. I think we payed $45, Syd was only charging $30.

Oh yes I forgot to mention that the day before with no competition Syd charged $85 so we said for the sake of competition we paid the extra so that when we come back to the island we wouldn't get ripped off. Well approx. 2 and half yrs later we heard on the grape vine that the HONEYMOON period was over and the prices were going up.

So if you want to go to the island it doesn't matter who you go with because they BOTH are ripping the public off by charging the same.

That is NOT competition it is down right thieviery (spelling)

Sorry I will get off my soap box now

PS not worth going onto the island at the moment because there is too much weed around.

One is a multi national and the other is a independent local family run business.

What happens to the price if the independent goes broke?

I have got to agree with Steve A. I own a house at Rainbow Bch and all the locals gave support to the Manta Ray and skipper Costa as Syd was ripping all people off. It was told to us locals that if we supported Manta Ray that the prices on the barge would remain within the range of all and with the increase of customers they would be able to retain the lower barge fees.
THEY GOT GREEDY, and joined with the other barge and are now both ripping us off big time. Dont give me that "independent local family run business"
They wanted our support, we gave it and now we are forgotten and must pay high barge fees. Rip off--- big time.

I agree, I use Manta Ray Whenever possible.

Unfortunatley, If only going one way at Rainbow and coming back through Hervey Bay you don't have much choice but to use Kingfisher Barges at both ends...

Both companies have tried different things to attract business from cheap deals to bikini clad staff. Basically the ACCC got wind of the war going on and stepped in. They forced both of the companies to come to an agreement on prices and stick to them. I still use the little guy though.

Rick A (Qld)

I thought it was illegal to come to an agreement on pricing? Isn't that the sort of thing that the ACCC takes action AGAINST?

Banjo,

The ACCC stepped in because when the price war was going it was realised that the prices they were charging were not sustainable and that it was most likely going to be the Manta Ray that was going to go out of business first. The ACCC worked with both parties to come up with an agreed minimum charge. Both companies can still charge more if they want, but it wouldn't be in their best interest, so you can say that it is an agreed price rather than a minimum.

Hi Leonora,

Both companies are a drive on/off arrangement. A 4wd is $65 and a tralier is $35 return.

Forgot to mention, that is from Inskip Point. The ferry from Hervey Bay is $110 return for a 4wd. Not sure how much with a trailer. Bookings for this one are essential as they only have 2-3 trips a day. The Inskip ferries run continuously and don't require bookings.

I was there a few weeks ago, and both operators quoted me $110 from Inskip Pt for car & trailer. We were with friends who also had car & trailer, and as there were no other vehicles in sight, and both barges were waiting around doing nothing, I tried to negotiate a better price. Without putting to many tickets on myself, I am a pretty tough person to deal with - I never pay full price for anything without trying to get a better deal and most times I do alright.

The best I could do with these guys was $100. They both started off by saying they would match the other guys price, and it wasn't easy to get a better price than $110 from either of them.

At Busy times both companies have additional barges. At least one is drive on - reverse off. The small one called "Manta ray helper" I beleive.

This is an interesting situation. As often happens when a new player takes on a large monopoly operator, the big player tries to force the small player out. In this case, the ACCC argued (successfully) that Kingfisher Bay was using predatory pricing. They reduced their return fare from $70 to around $20 and were prepared to run at a loss. They had the financial strength to do that, but the new player did not and would have gone broke, with a return to a monopoly.

The ACCC forced a deal where return fares below $34 ($17 one way) could not be charged. Several other restrictions were also put in place to prevent predatory behavior by Kingfisher.

So we now have two operators which should result in competition. But what has happened (and always does with just two operators in any area of business), is a comfortable duopoly. Whether by agreement (which would be illegal) or common sense, both operators have realised that the market is big enough for both to make a good living, provided the price is high enough. If one decides to put the price up, the other now follows.

So, in effect there is no competition. So by all means support the local family business over the big corporation. I do. But don't be fooled into thinking you are keeping competition alive. Competition died a few years ago in this business.
