I have a 100 series V8 and am considering conversion to LPG. I have seen a couple of questions in
Forum re this but no one seems to have done it yet. So, like the other guys I am also seeking comments on V8 conversion to LPG. Or reasons why it is not advisable. My discussions with local Toyota dealer were not encouraging but they cannot give any technical reasons why it should not be done. I am not concerned with where to put the spare wheel or the economy - just want to know if my engine will fail if run on gas. Have heard rumours of burnt out valves and valve lag - whatever that is - but also have heard many good stories but only for the 6 cylinder motor. Others have said I must install an "oiler" - help again - what are they talking about?
For the record I do a lot of touring with a 21 ft van for what that's worth and can easily return 20l/100 overall for a 4 week 6,000km trip - of course that's a combination of towing and sightseeing type driving.
Any and all info helpful
Cheers
Bob

Bob,
Can't help you with the V8 but i would think it would be possible.
To be sure I would suggest a phone call to Scott at Metropolitan Autogas in
Brisbane (07 3256 0333) and he would be able to give you the right info.
I have an 80 series 6 cylinder, dual fuel, with an Impco fitted and had over 100000kms of trouble free motoring until some clown hosed down engine. After that I had an engine backfire which blew out air flow meter, while i was running on gas.
Also had a further backfire on trip to
Broome and the problem was traced to an arking in ignition leads.
Apparently the ignition leads for LPG running need to be a certain type and not the standard issue, which
mine were at the time (though i got over 100000kms on them)
Scott at Metropolitan autogas, when he fixed things up for me, told me to make sure I had the right ignition leads, which are to be changed every 80000 kms and spark plugs to be changed every 20000kms.
When the backfire happened we were on trip to
Broome from
Gold Coast and I had to change over to petrol at Kununnara and towing a 17ft Jayco poptop got an average of 22l/100kms (9858kms) which is close to your 20/100.
Whilst running on gas prior to the problem got 30.5l/100kms (3212 kms) and the average cost per kilometer was
LPG 23cents
PETROL 30 cents
Re the "oiler" perhaps this is an "upper cylinder lube system" .
If you speak to Scott ask him about that too.

Thanks for the info. Will be contacting Metropolitan Auto Gas this week - been too busy till now. Have found out the the "oiler" is probably a "Flashlube" installed to maintain lubricant to the upper cylinder. Am now showing interest in the Parnell sytem - see reply from Anthony.

My sister's 2004 100 series was converted to gas about 3 months ago.
There are quite a few system for them older style and Injection systems.
My sister got older style impco system and it uses about 22l per 100 on gas
(was about 18l per 100 on petrol).
Few companies in victoria that supply them are www.vags.net.au
and www.parnell.com.au
