G'day all,

Will be spending some time around Narrandera over xmas and was wondering if anyone, locals maybe, know of any good camping or fishing spots accessible by car.

Thanks

Nuts,

I remember vaugely about 2 - 3 kms west of the Mobil truckstop on the sturt highway (the one going to Hay) there is a turnofff to a state forest on your right as you head west. I went down into this state forest and had a bo-peep, turned out it went down to the Bidgee with some beaut campspots for 1 family at a time (read not very big). Could get down there in a family sedan if it is dry but would not attempt it in the wet as this ground would get very boggy, I didn't get a chance to throw the line in so can't comment on this. Was very peaceful down there no road noise and no louts, bet if it was Friday nite it would be a different story. I have also stayed in the lakeside caravan park in Narrandera but found most of the sites to be on uneven ground so if your in a tent this may be a pain in the preverbial.

Happy and safe xmas.
Trevor.

G'day
I was born and bred in good ol' Narrandera; still have family living there too.
Trevor is right about the area on the 'bidgee, just west of the truck stop.
You could also have a gander at 2 other spots...........
One is what they call "6 mile".....Drive eastwards from town from the Memorial Gardens. That is called Victoria Avenue. Just keep driving; it'll take you out of town and you'll hit a gravel road (known locally as "The Old Wagga Road) just after you go over the top of a hill. Keep going along and about 10 klm out there is a flat area on the banks of the Main Canal which is (usually) full of water and easy to access. The local speed boat/skiers use it and you can camp there too.
Other than that, there is an area known as the Town Common. This is down between the Main Canal and the River. Access is via a bridge near the entrance to Lake Talbot swimming pool......go over the bridge near the pool entrance and turn left, go over a grid and then it's a couple of klicks to the river.....several spots where you can access beaches on the river.
Just a word of cautionary advice though............... Since I left town in 1971, there has been a steady influx of "original Australians" (to be "PC") and they can be somewhat less than pleaseant at times. Be careful.....
Cheers

Roachie,

I work in Narrandera about every 2 - 3 months, next time you are planning to visit family there, drop us a line and I'll see if I can wing it to be there at the same time.

Nutz,
I would defineately take on board what Roachie says about some of the undesireable locals there. I am a fairly confident person when it comes to camping almost anywhere but I got hassled big time coming out of one of the local watering holes (pub), put the Heeby Jeebies up me and have found another camping area further afield.

Cheers Trevor.

G'day Trev,
I don't tend to get back there much nowadays....Mum passed away back in June and although I still have a brother there (the local barber and sports store owner/operator) and my sister lives in Leeton, I really have no desire to go back there. However, will still pass though there on our way to east coast to see my wife's folks and maybe my other son in Canberra occasionally.
Cheers mate
Roachie

Thanks for all the advice, I'll be staying at friends in town now anyway so will probably just do a bit of fishing with a few cool ale's, I've had others warn me about native two legged ferals in the area so will be staying at home after dark....
Ill check out those spots anyway and see if I can feed the fish, as per usuall......(one might be dumb enought to bite my hook one day)
Thanks again
