I am getting a
HF Radio with Autotune aerial installed this week, apart from VKS-737 and Radtel Channels. WHAT other "Transmit" TX channels should I get put in. Eg, All the RFDS channels? or do you contact the RFDS through the VKS-737 network.

Depends, what other channels are you licensed for ? Yes you can access the RFDS through the 737 network, but it may be handy to have them availiable, jusr in case. You might also have the HF CB channels put in.

Thanks Footloose, I am not licensed, just joined VKS-737, do you have to be licenced to have the RFDS TX Channels put in?

Cobber, These questions have been answered by Banjo. I'd agree that if you are in serious trouble then they will help first and ask questions after. The RFDS still have a sked session on some bases, and although they mostly rely on the emergency alarm, my discussions with the Qld section have indicated no plans for them to get rid of HF. And they told me they copuld quote that.
However, should you have other
services put in as transmit and a child or "partying" adult get access to your set, be aware that there can be consequences.

When you join Radtel and VKS737, you are licenced to comm with their bases, and members, only. You can of course comm with RFDS (or anyone) IF there is real drama at hand. To comm with "outsiders" at any other time you need an applicable licence. An Outpost licence from the ACMA (Fed Gov) covers most needs. That said, VKS and Radtel
membership is comprehensive - within VKS, you can selcall a host of authorities for free via fixed connections and get them on the phone (when available - and HF conditions permitting). Radtel has the greatest flexibility, in that you decide the phone number (mobiles too) but there is the cost. Radtel does not cater for vehicle to vehicle though - so VKS and Radtel are in fact complimentary. I'm with VKS only - I don't need to comm with anyone specific, while away. The Outpost licence would be baggage in my view.

er...... re my ramblings above.......yes - have the RFDS frequencies installed, BUT you may get them sooner via selcall (via VKS or Radtel) when the shizen hits the proverbial. .... most of their "clients" in remote areas have the phone on now..... less and less contact via HF as I understand it.... they probably don't monitor the channels - just wait for an emergency signal to go off.

Do you or do you not need an additianal license to use HF when a member of VKS and the vks channels are the only ones you can get (muti tap) I have heard you need some government supplied license additionall to vks
membership but am unsure

If I have you correctly, no. HF use falls into two main categories in my view - recreational (the vast majority) and emergencies (relatively few cases). VKS covers all of the above, but you'd need selcall on your hardware to gain the best advantage.Radtel is for phonecalls- any number you like). As I see it, the ACMA Outpost licenece is for HF users that want nothing to do with the above (or similar) organisations. By the way - I'm VKS volunteer staff - but trying my best to be balanced.

Davoe, If you only have VKS737 frequencies you do not need a radio licence. This was confirmed by VKS737

I have a licence issued by A.C.A. and it is called a mobile outpost licence, which I have a separate call
sign. I am also a member of the R.F.D.S. Before VKS was on air all we had was to communicate was the R.F.D.S. frequencies and generally after hours on the
Alice Springs frequencies one could talk to other stations providing you did not interfere with their transmissions. Bases like
Port Augusta were on air 24/7 and you did not use those base frequencies. Before Radphone bases had telegram sessions where you could send and recieve telegrams. This was our only comms with the outside world. I still have both the A.C.A. and V.K.S.licences and as i have had the comfort to have medical advice over radio from the R.F.D.S. I believe that all who travel in the bush should support the R.F.D.S. as they are the people who will assist. The outpost licence is $35.60 a year and about the same with R.F.D.S.
membership. I can contact the R.F.D.S. direct, or through V.K.S. however would probably go direct.

Cobber What model HF are you getting? New or Second Hand?
The new Codan NGT comes fitted with all the frequencies you may require including VKS, RADTEL, RFDS, and a few others.
I would assume that Barret would also fit the same.

Similar to Barret, the new units will come with all these frequencies and many more.
You won't need to do anything.
As indicated, under VKS
membership you are using there frequencies under authority from them. This is the same for Radtel.

Cobber, Landie has answered you correctly, The NGT comes with everything you may want frequencies wise.
No need to worry at all, All RFDS Bases are fitted, Radtel, VKS and even Bush Telegraph, which I thought was defunct?????? And a few more.
As answered above you can only use VKS and Radtel with the correct
membership and I don't think that anybody monitors RFDS anymore so VKS would probably be your first point of contact.
The biggest issue you will have is to learn to drive it, the printed Hand Book is pretty useless but the CD that comes with it has all the good info.
Enjoy.
Cheers
