Wondering if anyone has a 100 series GXL diesel with manual box [not the factory turbo]. Reason for asking is that I would like the solid front end with a turbo diesel and this seems to be the only way to go. Thanks for any input. Phil.

I had a 2002 model. Great truck except tottally gutless. If you intend to tow anything larger than a box trailer you might want to investigate a turbocharger. In all other respects it was a great unit and I reckon a better vehicle than my current model Turbo ifs auto. I did about 200000 hard klms in
mine and didnt have any problems at all, apart from leaking power sterring pump, which was easily repaired.

G-day.... Thanks for the reply. I too had a previous model with a watercooled turbo, but it was prone to temp gauge going full scale when under pressure of steep hills. Also it was auto. I have heard a Denco oil cooled turbo should eliminate this problem. I would like to pull something bigger than a box trailer and don't like the temp gauge going full scale. Phil.

Phil,
I had a 99 model and as wheeler said above it was gutless for the hard towing I do.
The gearbox was the achilleis heel in
mine (rebuilt twice and due for a third when I sold it) but apart from that it was a superb truck. If it had not had a stuffed gearbox, I feel quite sure I would still own it today. So if you come across a 99 red one for sale beware it could be
mine still with that same $hitty box lol :-))
Cheers Trevor.

Phil,
I have an 02 model. I reckon I had it 6 weeks before I stuck a turbo on it (safari). I haven't had any problems with it. I've done some hard towing in hot weather and haven't bothered the temperature guage at all.
I'm really happy with my set-up
Regards
Stephen J.

Stephen J. Looking at the picture, it looks like a GXL. Would that be right? Also, is it a manual? I had the auto and although it was a great truck of road, with Ultimate
suspension and 33" rubber. It was a shocker on the road. Never seemed to be at the right rev range to make the turbo work. It had a DTS system on it. I have Patrol 4.8 petrol at the moment and can't wait to get back into a Cruiser again.
Regards Phil.

I also have a 2002 manual 100 series. Had a Turbo-glide turbo fitted and although it hasn't grown wings I'm still happy with it's new towing capability. Just a word of warning - if you buy a new vehicle and have an aftermarket turbo fitted during the warranty period Mr Toyota may use this as an excuse for not honouring the warranty

Have you looked at a Troop Carrier?
Particularly the 5 seater RV model, factory turbo diesel. The heavier 5 speed gearbox and live front axle.
Worth a look,
Geoff.

Thanks Geoff. Hadn't thought of that. I'll chase that one up. Some descent
suspension and that would make a great tourer. Phil.

Phil,
I'm going down this path at the moment. Looked at the cruiser wagons and was inspired by the factory turbo diesel but was left cold by the IFS.
Looked at the base wagon with its live axle front end, all good there. I could turbo the 1HZ, good too. Prado 5 speed box? No thanks.
Then remembered the old troopy I had years ago. The new RV has the same styling as the old 2H'er, more go and more creature comforts.
The RV troopy ticked all my boxes, live axle, factory turbo diesel, decent gearbox, good tourer, good load capacity.
Geoff.
