Hi, Last June I was camping and fishing at Bathurst Head (plan to return again next year) and every few days we drove up to the abandoned Resort there for our shower water. Just the other week someone was telling me that it has been burnt down. Would anyone know if that is correct? A shame if it has. Allso does anyone know the story on how it came to be built and then abondoned?
Thanks for you interesting site,
Murray

Hi Murray, I was up there in 2000 and 2001 and we use to do the same with the shower. What a view hey.

It wouldn't surprise me if had been burnt down but last I heard it had been turned into a Ranger's Base.

The story I heard when I was up there was that a rich bloke seeked permission of the Property owner if he could build a mini resort there, which he obviously did. It was aimed as a fishing resort mainly for blokes (hence the "donger" style accomodation). Not sure how long it ran for but the goverment got wind of it and shut him down because he'd never got any approvals from council. Some of the writing on the walls inside the main hut from sail boats that have used the harbour as a safe anchorage have dates going back to 97 if i remember correctly.

Nice spot but too "busy" now.

Thanks for that info Hughesy,
It sure was a great view. We would sit on the veranda after our shower, having a beer while waiting for our clothes to dry..

June/july 2005 it was abandoned, though I think the DPI boys bed down in the old Dinning room when inspecting the erea.

As for being to busy, we may have been lucky as there was not many people in the area.
We are planning another trip there next year

Cheers Murray

It's an old mining camp. Can't remember off hand the letters on the sign in the main hall but you can work it out from it. There was a mine on one of the closer islands and this is the accommodation. Never was a resort just a story that got circulated. Was there in June 2005 and it was a dump, people have totally trashed it and in this case it's the white's. Damn disgrace!! People had S$@t all over the ground. The toilets and for that matter all the area was a health hazzard.

Hi Austravel,

Your info source may be right but I have my doubts it would have been a mine camp. If it was it would be the best in the world (mining camps always use dongers unless it is a long term operation). Mine camps are ussually located on the mine lease also not on some cocky's place.

Your right though about the place being trashed. It was in a preety bad state when I was there, let alone 4 years later. Thats why I stopped going up there, people were just leaving rubbish and bleep e everywhere (thinking that some sort of garbage collection service was running). It was a disgrace. Well atleast the rangers patrol the area now to keep the riff raff out.

I know it sounds to good to be true but it's what I've read. I think the mine was for Wolfram. Probably put on the mainland due to ease of transport etc. From memory it's even mentioned in one of Ron and Viv Moon's books. Someone may remember the plaque in the dining room, was it SHRM or something like that??

You might be right, but SHRM is a catering mob.

Jesus I would never have gone on R&R if that was were I had to stay while at work. The worst thing would have been having a sickie and then having to sit in your room and look at the view.........then again you might be able to convince the boss that fishing is good medicine.
