Hi all,

A mate of mine is looking to turn to the dark side. He's trading in the faithful 'lux on a Patrol. He is currently looking at at '01 (06/2001) Patrol Wagon 3.0 TD 60,000kms fairly standard for $35k Sounds a bit much for me but I really don't know much about Patrols at all only that the early 3.0 TD's had some major issues!
My question is this.....

At what point did Nissan sort out the 3.0L and what models are safe to buy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Scoey!

Hi Scoey,

Suggest you pass this on to your mate. It's only one mans view but he seems fairly learned and knowledgeable on the subject.

Lonard's Patrol Report

I am not biased towards Nissan or Toyota but there are quite a lot of both on the roads that seem to have lead a relatively trouble free life. Reading through the forum, I think most issues with the Patrol 3.0L diesel seem to have occurred to people that have done a lot of towing???

Good luck and I hope your mate finds the vehicle he is after.

Cheers Browser! I'll definately pass that on - looks pretty comprehensive. I have been accused on numerous occasions to be blindly loyal to Tojo's and it hurts to see a mate buy a Nissan but if he's got his mind set then I should just support him in his decision! LOL!

Yep I agree that the problems probably aren't as wide spread but I figure if you can buy a model without the inherrant problems then that's a good start.

Thanks for you r help! :-)

Thems the ones.

I would be looking at 3.0TD's from 2003 onwards.

Cheers for the advice! I thought the '01's were in the questionable range. Will pass that on!

Don't do it. For a start it is over priced. A mate is currently handing over around $2500 to get his 3.0 Td rebuilt after number 1 cylinder decided to get a hole in it. Usually it is numbers 3 or 4, what are the chances.

He is now trading up to the GUIII once the engine is fixed.

I have a Prado Td so I'm not worried, shame my mate couldn't find one at the time he was looking so he got the Patrol instead. Oh well....

I thought it was exxy too! Yeah I coudn't convince him that an 80 series (or any Tojo for that matter) would be better either! haha! You reckon that's the right bait??

Thanks Wizard1, I guess the lesson learned is be patient and wait for the right truck. It's a buyers market at the moment in QLD with the fuel price jump!

Just on that , bit left field.

He could get a REAL smicko 4.5 Petrol Patrol , on gas , for Mid $20's , heck , even pick up a Dual Fuel Ti Patrol (with all the luxury bits) for mid/late Twenties.

Bullet proof , Reasonable fuel economy on gas , certainly purchase wise , and you aren't paying the Premium Purchase price for a diesel.

Given that you're from SA and you probably don't get XXXX down there Roachie, I'm inclined to agree with you. Your taste in beer is probably pretty in line with your choice of vehicle! HAHA!!

Now I'm just being nasty! ;-) Just kidding mate!
Cheers

Yeah and we should probably keep that to ourselves! Seems the more of them from down south find out what they're missing - the more Mexicans we get moving in up here! ;-)
