I've heard of books that give a list and information on
free camping sites in Australia. Does anyone know of these and where they can be purchased in SA?

Johnny,
I'm told www.campaustraliawide.com list free and cheap campsites.
I must get around to having a look at it.
Cheers,
Jim.

Answering myself, I must be bored.
I looked up the site, it's a bum steer.
There is however one called www.campsaustraliawide.com which is for a book which may help.

Hi Johnny,
I have a copy of the Camps 3 book and it list a lot of
camping sites around the country including free camps. It is very easy to follow and excellent to use when planning your journey and if you need to find an emergency stop along the way.
Cheers

Hi JohhnyP,
Not sure if there are similar publications in SA, to the ones we have in WA - "
Free Camping "North" & "South" (great books), though we can get ours from - good
camping stores - some news agents - some CALM offices ( Department of Conservation and Land Management) Possibly all states have similar books that would be more detailed than an "Australia wide" book.
I'm sure that residents from "the other side" will add expand on this.
Cheers,
Wayne W.

And it's got the Hema Atlas in it. It is available from the ExploreOz
shop.
Get the spiral bound one. A couple of $ more, but easy to use.

RAA
shop at Hindmarsh Sq has a great range of this stuff. Also the map
shop in Peel St; Map
shop on Unley Rd and some of the
camping shops like Snowys.
I'd guess Angus and Robertson would too. Theres a small paperback that just covers South Aus. I've bought those books, but must admit they aren't as useful as I thought.

I got "Camps 3" as referred to above from the Exploroz
shop. Not for eastern states, but for WA & NT is the Jan Holland "Priceless Camps" series also from Exploroz
shop. Look up westernbelle.com for which is excellent for WA free camps - haven't used it for other states.
We
free camp most of the time and find our own spots. Old gravel pits, tracks into "bush", old roads. Occasionally have used a designated
rest stop, but have chosen big ones where you can get
well back from the road, screened by trees, and away from everyone else.
Happy
bush camping - that is the life
