Fitted my Hf today and thought it would fit under the Passenger
seat of my 94 80 series std as I have seen them there in 100 series.
Not even close so I looked in the cargo area and found the previos HF unit had been fitted on the passenger side just behind the cargo barrier above the wheel arch.
Hiding the cables was a snap as there is room under the trim that runs along the bottom of the doors. The remote head ended up getting screwed in lengh ways on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel along side the low range selector - not ideal but ok and the speaker is under the dash next to he uhf.
I havnt tracked down an earth braid for the ariel yet but It picked up a sked from the gascoyne ok. Now all i have to do is send away my VKS form so I can become a member and test it properly

Dave if you have a scanner, fill out the VKS form and scan it into your computer.
Then just email it to VKS as a .jpeg image.
Lot faster then snail mail.
Cheers

Bugga.
Just use Trucksters credit card, he's a good bloke and won't mind. Promise. LOL.
You could always scan the money order also. ;-P

Hi Davoe.
Sounds like a much better proposition any way. I got some good earthing braid from my local autoelec. He had different lengths all preterminated with a bolt point at each end. The braid was about the same width as the stuff on my autotune but a bit coarser strands.
Only thing I'd change is where the speaker is. HF in poor conditions is easier to understand at low volumes with the speaker close by your ear. I've mounted my speaker above the passenger door near the B pillar where it is out of the way of my head and the rear driver side passengers. Best move I made. Previous to that it was under the remote head in the passenger footwell. Now I can drop the volume and pull out more of the low down calls that were previously unintelligable.
Does yours have Selcall?

Re speakers - just a thought - on my 950 setup, the speaker is in a small foam box that I made - with 4m of cable I can run it out of the car and sit it anywhere when stopped - on the roof etc, it can easily be heard while setting up or cooking dinner etc - handy if you must hear a weather forecast from a base, or check for member messages etc, but you still want to get on with your
camping chores..... whatever. Hope it all works
well for you - welcome to the VKS club ! (Sierra 586)

Dumb qestion - I noticenot everyone has a 4 digit selcall number eg 586 or even only 2 digits. Do you just add a zero or2 on the front to selcall?

You apply for a selcall number to your licensing authority - they gave me 5861 - easy to remember against my 586 callsign - point is, it was available - if the number has been snaffled by some other user (any network - any licence) then you have to take something else. I guess the issuing agent tries for easy numbers to remember, low numbers, any number - something like that order. While the callsigns (VKS737 - mobile Sierra 586) are network specific the selcalls are not - and any selcall number can be owner-set into the memory of any capable
HF radio. Hell ...... as long as we get the numbers right, it all seems to work !

Hi Davoe,
That's where you need your VKS directory if you don't know the number of the person you want to call.
My call
sign is Victor 632 but my selcal is 1632. I guess 0632 may have been taken.
There doesn't have to be any correlation between call
sign and selcall.
My Outpost license callsign is VZU565 but if someone wanted to selcall me on those frequencies they'd still have to use 1632.
Some sets will let you program different selcalls for different networks. I think that I can put 5 in but only really need one. It's the same on Radtel and VKS737. Radtel can also give you a confidential one for outgoing phone calls for billing purposes only.

Far better spot up high above the wheel arch. Too many $$$$ to mount under the
seat below the high tide mark after a failed
river crossing ;-) I agree also it's important to have the speaker up near your ear for clearer reception. Mines in the overhead console.
Cheers Craig........
