Hi All,
Oldies have a new Navarra str and commute daily along 10km dirt road then 20 km black top. Whilst on the dirt the rear end occasionally skips out over corrugations. To counter this 4wd is engaged. My question is. Can the hubs be locked in 4wd and left in permanently and then 4wd engaged/dis-engaged from the cab without having to get out. Will this do damage to the front drivetrain from driving with the hubs locked in on blacktop, but transfer case only in 2wd. Any advice appreciated.

this is no problem to the car. it will slightly disturb steering and use more fuel, but thats it. On the weekend there were some 2000 model pathfinders, they dont have unlockable hubs, they look like auto lockers but in fact are always locked - crap huh - anyway there are some nissans out there which dont even have the option so keep em in all you like.

Hi Lindsay,
All the hub locks do is engage/disengage the front
wheels from the drive shafts to reduce a bit of wear when not needed.
If you don't 4wd much it's a good idea to lock them up in 2wd from time to time to move the lube around a bit.
All locking them means is that the front drive shafts and therefore diff & prop shaft will be turned by the front
wheels. It's obviously not in 4wd until you move the 4wd lever to select it. (dash switch in some vehicles) It's no different from locking them at the start of a 4wd trip and driving in 2wd until you need it.
With the front drive engaged there is a slight turning circle and fuel economy penalty as previously described, and obviously some components will wear more.
My hubs are in regularly. I can barely pick the fuel economy difference.
