Has anyone found Coopers to be a bit slippery in the wet. I have 255/70R16 on a Hilux and have got 80% tread left on them. Went for a drive in the wet and ended up on the wrong side of the road. Tyre pressure was 34 front/ 32 back. Hilux was empty.

G'day Nobby,
I have stt's on a lc100td. I find that they have sufficient grip in the wet, and will let go progressively. Have not exprienced any sudden slides. I run 36 tyre pressure.
cheers

I've got the ATRs on my Hilux. I thought they were great in the wet. Never had a problem. Had LTs (don't remember what brand) on my previous Courier Dual Cab and they were treacherous in the wet. Like driving on ice.

G'day Nobby, Tyres, pressure and handling, especially in the wet are a pet project of mine. I have Cooper ST's (265/75R16 LT) on my GUIII and they stick like excrement to a blanket in the wet.

There are a few factors involved, but the first, cheapest and easiest is tyre pressure. Even at 34F & 32R they may be under inflated and any under inflated tyre wont stick in the wet!

How do you know if they are under inflated? It's a bit of a process to go into, but I'd be happy to reply by email if you wish. My email address is petermg@bigpond.com

Regards,

Peter

First thing i thought you got a Prado.

Second those pressure are a tad high for a Hilux aspecially in the wet.

I have the Cooper ST/Cs and there fine in the wet, i run the what the vehicle manufacturer pressures which is a good base to start with when playing with pressures from there you can workout whats best suited to your driving style, these pressure are set for comfort and handling, a sort of compromise, i don't know about you, but i don't feel like adjusting my tyre pressures everytime it's wet or dry.

G'Day Redback, yes mate I have just hopped into a Prado, but this is the work truck. The Coopers are AT's. Sorry about that. I certainly don't feel like adjusting pressure in line with the barometer readings, but yesterday I judged them to be bloody dangerous in the wet. I don't drive fast but ended up at 45deg. down the road as I went aeound a corner.Great in the dry. Thanks for the response.. Nobby

I run 42psi in the surf with MTR's and have been stunned by the grip in the wet, very difficult to lock em up unless you stab the brake pedal. Surf would'nt be much heavier than the lux...

Isn't that interesting - one says the pressures are too low, another too high. Typical of responses to tyre questions - rarely consensus.
Nobby - you should have mentioned which model of Coopers you have - an STT will not perform the same as an ST which will not perform the same as ... and so on. BTW I have always found STT's (mine are the older style) to be excellent in the wet.

Same hear, find the AT's excellent in the wet.

I too think that that pressure is a little low, but not sure of pressure with that size tyre.
I run 44psi in mine on road and to make the ABS come on in the wet I basically have to slam on the brakes and keep the pedal pushed down HARD.

Nobby, in the new Aus 4wd (Jan '06) they've done a test on the popular All Terrain tyres. Coopers came out top for off road but 2nd overall. What let them down was their performance on the black-top.
These tests do have their critics but it seems a pretty thorough test with some interesting resuts. I supose there are other factors they haven't taken into account particularly in individual cases, but worth a look at.

we have the new cooper stt's on our triton, and in the wet they are fantastic! stopped better than the highway tyres that were on it. we will be putting a set of 33" stt's on our gq as well. better than my old bfg at's both on and off road! (quieter as well!)

I have the ATR's and love them, in the wet around the corner with a little too much throttle they do spin a bit , but I would think that would be the case with most tires, a torquey diesel engine and light arse end.

Hilux's have always been terrible on the wet with the standard tyres. The4 new model handles much better than the old - the work truck is a dual cab 05 Hilux SR with standard tyres - with the new engine it breaks the rear end; my new hilux I fitted Cooper St's and they are much better. But with no weight in the back I am careful and sometimes will flick to 4x4 when really wet, because I hate losing the rear end big time in traffic.
Cheers Jeff
