Does anyone know if there are any places where you can purchase second hand satellite phones? We don't have the money to buy one new and are planning on travelling for 6 months so it is too expensive to hire one.

If you can wait until Febuary I have a friend returning from travelling Australia and she will be selling her second hand satellite phone. Contact me if this is an option.

Michael,

Thanks for your reply. We would definitely be interested! We aren't leaving until beginning of May so February would not be a problem. What city is your friend in?

Rowena Telstra last year in October were selling off cheaply, the slightly larger type satellite phones, new and second hand. I cannot remember exactly what the prices were as I did not need another one and did not take to much notice. I suggest you go to a Telstra owned shop, not a franchise Telstra shop and find out if they still have them available. These phones were about the size of a laptop notebook, but perform well.

Roweena, I purchased a Motorola 9500 from Telstra in November of 2002 for $995.00. This older phone is about half the price of their new one and works quite well.

Bridget lives in Melbourne. I will email her to find out how much she wants for the phone. It is a newer type phone, not the briefcase type.

Get the Telstra Motorola Irridium system. DO NOT GET the vodaphone system. I Have owned and used both - there is no comparision in relation to EVERY aspect from thh accessories, handset, call quality, reliability, robustness of service, and cost.

Sean, since you've owned and used both and have some strong opinions about this topic, would you be interested in sending me some detailed info on the comparions. I would like to publish Hot Topic on Sat Phones soon and I'd be interested in your "research".
