Hi All
I have a Hilux with 94,000 on the clock and I have been enquiring about changing the timing belt. I have been told that the 3.0lt diesels dont have to be changed til 150,000 instead of 100,000 as in the earlier models. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Also is there a time limit on these (in years) that they should be changed at?
(ie car that is quiet a few years old with low mileage).
Cheers
Andy

I Think time limit is between 5-8 years could be longer 10 at the Max but.
For me 150,000k’s for me is a little risky on a belt, If it were me I would be thinking about doing it around the 125,000k mark, I have heard of a few belt’s Not on Toyotas but, that have failed coming up to the change interval.
Then agene you are talking to the man who has been driving around with a F***ed Timing Chain tensioner for the last 20,000k’s, But I like to live dangerously LOL.

Is it the factory turbo'd 3.0L (1kz-te) or the naturally aspirated (5L)? I'm not sure how hard the 5L is but the 1kz-te doesn't even need the drive belts removed it's so much a peice of cake. Just a matter of removing a bolt and the clips, marking it, ripping it off and whacking the new one on. If it were me, I'd problaly do it at the 100k if it's only $100-200 fitted. I think the belts are about $50 and if they try to charge you more than an hours' labour they are taking you for a ride. (
well that's on the 1kz-te anyway).

Hi Andy,
I have the same motor in my Hilux. At 150,000 klm I changed the belt, idler pulley, tensioner pulley,
water pump and front crankshaft seal. All these components were in excellent condition when removed. The
water pump was shiny aluminium inside. That Toyota red coolant works a treat!
To turn off the timing belt light was a pain. It involved removing the instrument cluster.
Regards
Scooby

Had my 1KZ-TE done at 150,000. Mechanic said easy to do. Charged me $50 for labour and $95 for the belt.

150K is correct but I would do it at 100K.
The funny thing is I received a flyer from Toyota today, Mechanical workshop, and it was advertising timing belt kits.
Conversation with my mechanics working for me was
"The belt is due at 150 K. You replace it at 150 K like the book states with genuine Toyota parts. The new parts only come with a 12 month unlimited Km warranty. So if that belt fails at say 18 months and only 30 k you have no come back. Tell me if I am wrong but if it only has to be changed at 6 years or 150 K shouldn't it have a warranty of 6 years or 150 K?
