Hi all,
I am thinking of fitting an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge to my 100 series, a 1HZ with Denco aftermarket turbo. Where in SA is a good place to find one and roughly how much should I pay? Also, what temperature range is normal and at what temperature should I start backing off? I have searched the archives but can't seem to find any definitive answers.

I can thoroughly recommend the Thermoguard unit. I have the Denco turbo upgrade done to my Patrol and have recently added an extra thermocouple probe; so I now can switch between above turbe and below turbo temps. I know this overkill, but I have read up a lot about this issue. Ian from Thermoguard says (and I agree with his thought process) that the "before" turbo temperature is more important to know, because this is the temp of the gases that are gunna be hitting your turbine and may cause it very expensive damage. The thing I have learned recently is that a turbo is a "user" of heat (not a "creator" of heat). This is evidenced by the fact that I can switch between the 2 probes and find that the input temp can be around 500oC and the below temp is around 380oC!! The 2 probes are about 250mm apart!!
Despite Ian's belief that the best place for the thermocouple is above the turbo, if you talk to the industry "experts" (I hate that word), they all apparently work off temp's below the turbo for setting-up their and monitoring these devices. So, that is why I chose to have a bob each way. I still only use the one in-cab monitor, but have fitted a DPDT switch so I can see what either probe is registering at any given time.
You will probably install your probe in the ready-made hole provided below the turbo, and I would suggest that you wouldn't want to ever see that temp go above 520oC.

Out of interest, is there a fixed relationship between the "above turbo" and "below turbo" EGTs e.g. always say about 180 degrees different? Or is it a ratio i.e. always roughly so much % different?
Maybe you can see where I'm heading with this..... ;-)

No mate, no real relation between the 2.
When I'm accelerating hard and boost is up between 10 and 15psi, that is when the biggest gap seems to occur between the 2 temps, say up to 130oC difference.
When driving along steady at 110kph flat road etc and boost is around 6psi, the difference may only be 50oC or so.

I recently fitted
Beaudesert's 3" system to my '02 TD42T, and in the dump pipe there's a BSP thread (blanked) for inserting an EGT probe.
Based on yours, and a whole lot of other comments/discussions on various forums I'll get hold of a Thermoguard unit......and then monitor it!! LOL

Gerry, I bought the Isspro Colour coded gauge, makes it very easy to check at a glance, bought it on e-bay from the states. Can't remember how much or who from.

I use ISSPRO, mounted after the turbo. Its a nice colur coded face that makes it easy to see at a glance - mines on deg F.
Truckline (WINGFIELD 08 8340 6500) should have them (or be able to get them). Check www.isspro.com for the gauges.
Mine is the R607VW (which is colur coded for AFTER the turbo).
Dont exceed 1100F post turbo (about 1250F pre turbo on
mine) or EVER you'll
cook the turbo. Normal operation should be about 650F (
well it is on
mine).
Post turbo installation will save your turbo if the thermocouple ever breaks off, but could be down up to 350F (depends on fuelling levels and exhaust system).
Also dont try for too much boost on the 1HZ, or you will have issues. About 7.5PSI is the limit. This means you dont want one of those boost gauges that read to 30PSI!
