Dunno about an "engel" generator, but any lightweight 240v 50hz generator will do; eg, the Bunnings $99 cheapie. You just need to make sure that the frequency is pretty much spot on to 50hz, as Engels will not run beyond about 2 hz either side of 50hz.
Alternatively, you could use the 12v output of the gennie to keep your fridge running and your battery charged. The regulation is not all that crash-hot on the 12v output of a lot of gennies tho.

jerry thanks for the response. but honastly i would be a little worried about using a $99 generator on a $1200 engel. like the idear of charging the batterie of the gene. but i have been told by mates the cheap generators can blow up the fridges and engels will run directly off good generators have looked at honda type but told the engel one has the same motor as the honda and are as good . thanks mate...

No it's not. Your right Monkey68. The el-cheapo generators have a good chance of killing not only the engel but any fridge that has electronics. If you intend running a basic transformer type bat charger off it to a battery and then the fridge off the battery, then you'd be ok.

What you may find in better gennies is the quality of the speed governer. All gennies have regulators which control the voltage to roughly 240v regardless of engine speed, but the Engel compressors are pretty sensitive to frequency, and holding the engine revs accurately is fairly important. That's not to say that the Bunnings one won't do that. Just need to be sure that it does hold its revs properly over a range of loads. I don't think you damage the Engel when the power source is off frequency; it just stops cooling, but that can be a disaster in itself; eg warm beer - horrors!
In the past, I have seen gennies with a frequency meter to make sure revs are right (tho I can't name any in recent times).

True. A mate that runs a camping store told me engel won't honor warranty if damage is caused by this failure and that it's very simple to tell from the type of failure the cause.

I saw them at the Melbourne 4*4 show in October and there are a handful of differences but not too many, from what i recall they were,
- price Engel is a few hundred dollars cheaper for both models
- Engel is slightly heavier for the same model
- most parts on the engel say honda, if you look under the filler cap and stuff
- the baffling system for the exhaust or somehting is the earlier generation than the honda so it is not quite as quiet
- its green not red

Supposedly the Hondas are actually made in the Engel factory for them so they should know how to put the new ones together i guess.

I would not be surprised at all if the motor was honda like alot of mowers of different brands run briggs and stratton Motors - get the motors in an build the rest

The gennie on the Engel site and the Honda 1KVa seem to have quite different cases. The specs are unlikely to be the equivalent of the Honda, Yam, Kipors etc because the don't make a song about it. I suggest the price is too close to those below for consideration.....The others have the pure sine wave inverter technology and the eco throttle etc. May be of use - Honda dealer in SA is doing the EU10i for $1440 all up (includes cash back value) - Yam dealer is doing their equivalent for $1340 all up. Kipor at Snowy's here is about $900 I think.

Sawafuji who are engel, actually make the electrical side of the gennies for honda, so i would say they are pretty similar units, and you know the quality will be there, as the honda units are excellent.
