Is it like a small laptop - hmmm
well, in some ways yes, other ways no.
Go to www.ht.com.au then on the top menu click HARDWARE and on the side menu click COMPUTERS HANDHELD
They presently have the iPaq model 3970 for $849 which is a steal of a deal. You will need a Serial cable which is part number 250178-B21 at $45.00 and a 9 pin NULL modem adaptor to interface with your GPS serial cable. These are normally around $10.00 and most importantly a packet of screen protectors, and possibly a 12v car adaptor which is part number 253508-B21 for $65.00. I have seen many failures with alternative car adaptors. The genuine article is is a 2 amp adaptor especially designed for the iPaq battery.
The version of Excel on the iPaq is not the same as on your desktop and suggest you look at the Microsoft website about Excel, Word etc. compatability:
www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/default.asp
Warning, some brands and model of Windows CE units do not have a serial facility and under no circumstances can be interfaced to a GPS. Main thing about iPaqs, they have the best screen viewable under ALL light conditions including
bright sunlight, the range of accessories is considerable, and things like cables are substantially cheaper than other brands. For example the $45 cable for the iPaq which is a Serial/USB and charging adaptor and the Toshiba cable which is Serial only is $259. All these prices are current from the Harris Technology website URL above.
To upload and download waypoints, you can use the excellent freeware G7toCE from here:

I seldom now have to take my laptop out. The only reason why at times is due to needing a CD or DVD drive. As soon as the 1Gb CF memory cards are out, that will be the end of my laptop.
