Folks

When travelling with kids in the back seat for long periods, they may want to draw or colour-in.

I've seen fold down desks that attach to the back of the driver/passenger seats and fold up and zip up when not in use. They have pockets to keep stuff in as well.

Does anyone know what I am talking about and can anyone give me any brands names or suggestions on where to buy them from ?

Thanks

Yes we have one. I think my wife bought it through the preschool my daughter goes to.

Hi Rod

I got ours in Kmart. Only drawback is the kid needs to be pretty big or in a seat that sits a fair way off the seat back if on the drivers side - unless the driver is 6' tall and sits with the seat way back.

On the missus side it's no drama as she just slides her seat back as far as it goes.

A stable table works really well too. (those trays with the bean bag on the bottom.) Since we started using those for both kids we haven't really used the fold down thing. They have a lip around the tray which holds pens textas etc. quite well.

You can use the stable table to sit the lap top on for playing dvds too.

hi

we got ours in Big W, found them in the auto section there were a few different designs there, both my kids used them quite a bit while we were away, but my son pushed too hard on the desk bit and broke it...the pockets we found were generally too small to hold drink bottles....

I think the stable table idea is a better one, they can keep their pencils etc in a box next to them on the seat....

cheers

Hi Rod,

I would recommend the Stable Tables as they can be used anywhere, not just in the car. They are great for eating dinner off round the campsite or doing other activities outside of the car as well. I have one at home and use it all the time.

They are available from Big W, Kmart and Target and similar such stores - seen several lately in the Christmas junk mail.

Regards,
Juliana

When evaluating Ford Territory, I had seen them as Ford accessories

I've bought a couple of various models over time and none of them work for me. Problem is if the kids are still in carseats or even booster seats, they sit too far forward and their knees collide with the stuff in the bags. I have purchased the ones that actually hold stuff as I always find the kids need a range of things within easy reach. The problem is exaberated because we have 2 kids and only 1 side has the car seat attachment, so the youngest must sit on "her" side. So it could be fine if she stayed seated behind me (I'm short so I have the seat forward) but not fine when seated behind David (he is over 6 foot) so he has it all the way back. We need to change drivers so it doesn't work out.

The other problem with these bags is that they use up a lot of space where we tend to put stuff we use regularly and it makes it harder to get things in/out (eg. camp chairs - we lie them down across the back floor as the kids legs aren't long enough to reach the floor yet).

my Solution? Give kids a good ole' fashioned clipboard. Works fine. Store toys and stuff in a bag in centre of backseat, they can easily reach what they need.
Hope this helps.

A milk crate or plastic tub is also good in the back seat, one low enough for kids hands to reach. The clip board is a good idea, especially for little ones who are drawing all the time. The tub/crate can hold the soft toys and pencils/textas and spare paper etc, and you can glue plastic stubby holders into the tub/crate for them to store hold their drinks...no mess no fuss.

Cheers

I would think that a milk crate would allow little pens and things to slip through the gaps and would therefore prefer a bag for this use. However, I would make use a milk crate for other things but that begs another question - just where does one purchase a milk crate? I've never actually seen where you can buy these? Please tell me!

Hi Michelle,

You can purchase the solid sided crates from places like Target, Kmart, The Warehouse. You can buy them is a variety of sizes. What I use now for James and all his stuff on trips ie books, pens, pencils, game boy games etc is a medium sized plastic tub with a lid on it. As he now sits in the front seat on trips, the tub sits in the floor well and he can access it easily. It also gives him a good foot rest as he feet still don't touch the ground :)

Hope this helps.

Cheers
