Hi all,
Some friends asked us to go camping with them at Christmas, they where thinking of Wonnangatta Caravan Park at Waterford, but I just found out that it's going to cost my family of 6, $35 a night. Any suggestions for 2wd access camping, they don't have a 4WD, in the area a little cheaper, we are fairly self sufficent. I know I sound a little penny pinching when I have a family of 6. Is this the norm for 2 star caravan park in this area at that time of the year?

Regards
Craig K

The free camp spots are on the river at Talbotville, which is north from Dargo via Mt Grant. The other place is on the Wonngatta River up from Waterford.

Both are 2WD access.

Craig,

Dunno about the price vs time of year but I'd say so. Every man and his dog is in the high country over christmas holidays. There are very few parks or camps with full facilities so I guess they charge what they can get.

There's quite a few spots on the Wonnangatta around Eaglevale and the Talbotville camping area is free but will be busy.

But then if the caravan park is busy you are in no different situation except that you can't book at Talbotville so no guarantees of a spot.

I try and avoid the area at that time. Others who frequent it in busy periods may have an idea of whether you'll get a spot.

The 2wd route into Talbotville is through Grant off the Dargo High Plains Rd on McMillans Tk. Slow trip in but track was passable by 2wd last I was on it.

If you've got a fourby there's plenty to do out of there anyway. You'll have to have a way of keeping track of Total Firebans in there. No phone reception, but you should get a few radio stations even if on AM. Can't remember if I've tried - I use the HF. The rangers will be about.

Plenty of good family spots along the Lower Dargo Road, on the Dargo River.

It might be a 2 star caravan park but its location and ambience is 5 star. In comparison to other parks at popular spots at this time of year $35 sounds very reasonable to me.I'm surprised they have vacancies as when I enquired a few years ago for Xmas they were booked out and that was in June. The free camping spots along the Dargo River are fantastic if you can get one. Be warned though the party animals get in there and turn them into a floodlit ,generator driven pop cocncert like affair.
