gday folks,
im looking at buying a 1990 Troopy (2h).
Just had a compression test done and the readings were 400,400,380,410,410, 380.
i think this is
well below desirable compression...
Engine starts (hot and cold) and runs very
well, no smoke under load etc.
what do ya think?

Gday,
I was talking to my mate today with a 4 speed 1983 Troopy with the ol' 2H. I actually asked him how much the truck has cost him in the 4 years he has had it. Including tyres and maintenance, glow plugs, tyres etc...$2000. That's over 4 years and he's not keen to sell it. Still worth 6,000.00 as
well in the current condition.
I'm unsure of how many k's the above truck has on it, but my mates has 315 and it's as strong as the day he purchased it. However, do your research on 'desirable' compression figures for the truck, take into consideration the amount of k's on the motor etc, the amount being asked and take it from there.
Cheers
Chris.

Toyota Engine Manual states std compression of 398psi at 250 RPM with a lower limit of 284psi. Max difference between cylinders specified is 28psi.
Based on this you are at the limit I guess. Big question though is @ what RPM diid you do the test at??
My limited knowlege of these motors ( I just own and drive one) is that they just slowly wear out and get more and more slugggish. I am not aware of them simply stopping...having stated that I am sure someone will now correct me!!

cheers for you comments
the engine has 315k on the clock.
selling for 11k including drawers, dual batts, diff lock, bar work, good body.
as much as id like to tell him hes dreaming it seems like a reasonable price.
any more thoughts?

When I traded the 2H engine for the 6.2 V8 diesel, the first thing the manager at the conversion
shop did was pulling off the little hose from the rocker cover to the intake manifold and check what was coming out when the engine ran.
On my engine, 178Kkm, it was a barely noticeable mist. He said he's seen lots of smoke coming out of there, indicating a worn engine.
FWIW.

Desirable- 2746kpa
minimum- 1961kpa
maximum variation between cylinders 196kpa
You will have to convert it from KPA to psi
And yes he is dreaming more like around 8 grand

Gday, I may be wrong (it has happened before lol)
but i was sure Toyota had stopped using 2H engine around 1988 and went to the 1HZ.
like i said...could be wrong...but im sure by 1990 they were
well into 1HZ territory.

Hi revhead307,
I owned a 1990 Troopie with a 2H. Pretty sure that was the year they changed to 1HZ.
