Hi Cuffs,

If you use the right explosives, I wouldn't think that the twin exhausts would prevent blowing up the air bag.

Sorry........it's Friday!!!!!!

Hi Cuffs

I asume it is split from the extrators then you will only have 2 3 or 4 cyliders blowing the bag up. If it comes off the extrators in 1 and then splits after a muffler then you will be in trouble getting the pressure required.

In this day an age why are airbags still being connected to exhausts - why not thye option of inflating by a decent air compressor.

On my old airbag, I had to keep on replacing the rubber filler hose because the noxious exhaust gas kept on making it perish - surely nice clean air from a air compressor would be better than exhaust gas.

To answer the question - no - but if the twin exhaust has a linking balancing pipe then it is possible the bag will not fully inflate.

Air compressors deliver small volumes but at high pressure. Exhaust pipes 'exhuast' large volumes but at low pressures. If you use a air compressor it would take forever to blow up.

That's why you use a blower pump to inflate lilo's, beach balls, etc.
That's why you use a air compressor to inflate tyres..its all to do with pressure.

Cheers.

Wonder what feedback users of the Bushranger X-Jack would give about using a compressor to inflate them - it's designed for either exhaust or a compressor.

Just as a guestimate, if the X-Jack is 75cm high and 75cm in diameter, it's about 330L in volume - the Bushranger Max-Air is rated at 50Lpm. That's about 6.5-7 minutes to inflate from empty.

How long does one take to inflate using an exhaust?

probably only a few seconds from the 6.2l V8 diesel engine in my troopy.

I do have an air jack somewhere stashed away, though I think its smaller than the one mentioned above. I will dig it out from the 4WD box and try it out as I have never needed to use it yet, the bag was bought for a previous car.

Mmmmm all good points - particularly Scubaroo. Feral - your logic is not quite there - yes air compressors deliver low volume at high pressure but when that pressure is reduced by the air expanding in a container it doesn't matter. I wouldn't have thought that the volume of the air in a big 4wd tyre at 35psi wasn't all that different to an airbag at say 10psi. This is effectively the point Scubaroo is making but I don't think the bags are that big - but the logic is there. I think a decent aircompresser would take about 5 minutes to inflate - less if there is a pressure tank.

On my old 77 rangie I had a twin exhaust which was connected in the muffler .
To use the air jack I made a plug from a polybush that I bought which was JUUUST the right size OD and then put a bolt through it with an eyelet on one end and large washers each end. Place the polybush in one of the exhausts and screw the bolt tight, so that the polybush is compressed and swells to be a tight fit. voila!
