Hello everyone,

My brother inlaw has just picked up his new series III 3 litre TD Patrol. He has been told that he has to use a specific oil in it and cannot remember what it is. He needs to know because he didnt buy the vehicle from his own area and whilst he will get the major services done at our local Nissan dealer, he wants to do intermediate oil changes as required, hence the need to know what oil so he can buy it when on special and store until needed.

So, my question to all you series III owners is, what oil should he buy.

Thanks in advance.

Post ID 28228 offers some advice. Also there is a post in the last couple of months of a media release from Nissan on the correct type of oil, which I now cannot find

Your glovebox manual will say to use SAE 20W-40 or 20W-50 API CD, CE, CF or CF-4. Cold Areas SAE 10W-30 API(as above).
I used to use Nissan Voyager Diesel Oil 15W-CF-4 however I now use the new Nissan Semi Synthetic 10W-40, ACEA:B3. (Nissan have a brochure on their parts counter with all the info.
The part number for a 5litre container is B300510W40PK.(Costs around $32) I change oil & filter every 5000 k's.

Hi Cruiser,
If your brother inlaw can’t get the Nissan stuff, another option is Castrol Magnetic. I’ve heard that some dealers use it as it’s an equivelant to the Shell oil that Nissan market.
Personally, I use Mobil 1 in my Series III Patrol. A bit more expensive, but it exceeds every other oil on the market and is suitable in this case.

Its not that he cant get the Nissan stuff, as there is a dealer here.

He has just heard so many conflicting storys since he placed the order for the vehicle (he picked it up on Tuesday) he just wants to know what to do.

He has heard that some dealers are using the suggested Nissan brand grade oil and that others are using different grade oils and different brands.

I suppose it is a case of calling the dealer he bought it off and asking again (he was told, but cannot remember. He said there was so much they told him and he was so excited at the time of pickup, he has forgotten most of it)

He can then see the local dealer and ask if they are using the same brand and grade and then he can buy oil for the intermediate changes.

Thanks anyway guys.

Cruiser,
My reserch on the subject has found that it's not so much the recomended oil to use, but the oil not to use. (If that makes sence)
Nissan are now recomending a 10w/40, but the important thing is the "C" rating or the API if you like.
