Ok...Can someone confirm once and for all the following:
Is the Natmap Raster 250K Topo maps that you can download free from Geoscience Australia...........EXACTLY.......the same as the Natmap Premium Raster 250K topo DVD's.

I went into the local map store today to compare what I have downloaded and what the DVD shows and to me it is the same.

Just a yes or no answer would be fine as I am tired of comparing the cost of getting DVD's when the maps are for free.

Cheers,
Lyndon.

Pretty much the same, saved sections directly from the DVD mosaic.

would someone mind giving a very basic laymans overview of what these geoscience maps can do for us. I have looked at a lot of the maps on this site but none of them seem to be of any use for using in GPS software for seeing where you are on a more local scale. eg for national forest tracks. am i missing the point here or are there some really usefull maps on this site?

You are right. 1:250k is good for route planning and long range trips. For local tracks etc. you need to go to a more detailed map, ie 1:100k or even 1:50k if available. For much of the more remote areas however the 1:250k is all there is. (The comonwaelth is responsible for mapping to 1:100k, below that it is a state responsibility)

Another option are the satelite photo maps which are about 1:25k. These are more useful in open country as in timber tracks may be obscured.

"The comonwaelth (sic) is responsible for mapping to 1:100k, below that it is a state responsibility''

Not 100% true - well not for Northern Australia anyway - 50K mapping carried out by Royal Australian Survey Corps/Department of Defence and is administered by GeoScience Australia. Check the Geoscience Australia website for extent 50K (and other scale) mapping.

No they are NOT the same as the Premium Natmaps. They ARE exactly the same as the geographic projection standard Natmap 2005.

I too bought the Premium DVD and in future I think I'll just download them. There isn't that much extra detail in the hogher resolution images, They're still 1:250k after all.

The maps are identical with respect to information - both products start with same maps - main issue is resolution - premium has a higher resolution - so you can zoom in closer before thinking youve had too many beers.
