Fellow travellers,...........Looking for somewhere interesting to stop between Mackay and
Bowen for a one night stop over. Travelleing January.
We will have the camper trailer and can be self sufficient however a shower might be nice.
Have pulled up at
cape Hillsborough before so looking for somewhere different.
Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

go into
dingo beach and head onto Monties reef resort only about 5 ks of dirt, small outfit but very simple,(bar, cabins, fishing trips, thongs and singlet style). turn off about 5min north of prosepine and follow signs to haliday bay

Spade,
If you are chasing a
bush camp, try looking for signs to "sea acres or sea breezes" (something like that) about 10km south of
Bowen. They are trying to sell 1 and 2 acres waterfront blocks of land down there.
If you can find the signs, and if you are coming from the south they will be on your right. Go down this dirt road till you come to the waterfront blocks they are selling (you will be behind the waterfront blocks now) and turn southward and follow this road till you come to the river. there is a sandy turning circle here that is ideal for
bush camp. The river is teaming with fish and the banks of the river is clear enough to spot "
water lizards" (crocs) a mile away if there is any about. (I have never seen them here but you never know).
Also just south of
bowen (further north than my last suggestion) is a roadside
rest area, just near this
rest area there is a number of sandy tracks leading down to the bay. Any one of these usually leads to small clearings on the edge of the bay that adjoins the south side of
Bowen.
Both these camps you will need to be self sufficient as there is nothing and, generally, no-one there.
Further north of
Bowen there are quite a few good
bush camps also. Ask at the Inkermann store for directions to
Wunjunga (pronounced "onejunga") it is
well worth the effort to find this place. Inkermann is about 22km sth of
Home Hill. While you are there find out how to get to Groper Ck, there is a very basic caravan
park there meant for fisher folk.
Hope this helps
Regards Trevor.
