I have a neighbour who was very lucky. He got to 198,000km before his 3.0 litre Patrol totally expired. Clouds of smoke and that was it.

Good point Toohey, we see a lot of them out there too, and it is probably only a small %age that blow, but all the same it was pretty poor for a major manufacturer to let it get to a stage that the perception became negative, & people felt like they were driving a time bomb. There have been a number of first hand reports from people on this
forum, but to my knowledge, no first hand report since the modifications in 2001. We've all "heard" of it happening in later models, but only only second hand reports. Breakdowns do occur in various makes of vehicles for various reasons. My early 2002 model will tick over 100,000 this week. Motherhen

198,000 and expired..Doubt it..Sounds like Bul#@%*t to me as a more likely sienerio (Help me spell that one..How do you find it in the dictionary if you can't even spell it?) is that the seal on the "cold side" of the turbo (not an actual part of the motor, but like the
water pump,is neccessary for on-going operation, even though it will operate without it..For a while,in the pump case)..The so called "cloud of smoke" from the "witness ? " would have been blue in this case..No doubt, this story comes from a user of a different brand of machine and must surely qualify as "the short story of the week,or the weak short story"..If there was an element of truth in the message, surely some other facts or fiction would have been added..We can only presume the operator of the vehicle is "sevicing savvy" and has enough mechanical knowledge to drive the machine within the limits established by the much respected manafacturer. If the "neighbour" had,as many folk do,purchased the rig second-hand,how do we,your readers validate the fact that this is the true distance the rig has travelled..A "neighbour" of
mine was after another speedo assembley for his 'cruiser at coastal wreckers.."how many clicks do you want? Example: 80k $490..120k $350..190k $250 etc" Get the drift?!MPG:7!

Oh dear, what a tangled web I have woven etc. I should not have bothered. I mentioned it because it is the fifth Nissan to blow (either 2.8 or 3.0 litre) that I have seen to expire, just amongst people I know. You must think I am a closet Subaru dealer or something.
It was a 2001 model, bought new and serviced, etc, dropped a piston stuffed the top end and he has now bought a GT Forester. End of story.

Thank you, I think that is what everyone wanted to know. It's not good enough from a major manufacturer is it. (or any manufacturer for that matter)

I've read many adverse reports on the 3.0TD. Amongst my circle of friends, several of whom drive them I don't know of anyone personally who has had a problem.

So why a GT Forrester why not another Patrol, either 4.2 or later model 3.0lt, still a good vehicle.

Pat,
I only know one person with the 3lt (all the others have 4.2) and there's $hit itself at 110000km. Not good in my opinion but Nissan did fix that one fully under warranty even though the warranty had expired.

I drive one, a 2000 model with 105,000 KLM's on the clock. A few drama's with air mass sensor but otherwise sweeet maate.
I personally know 4 ppl with a 3.0 patrol, various year, KLM etc; I am the only one to report problems.
When I bought
mine in 2003 with 64,000 K's everyone said I was mad....OH
WELL.
