Does anybody know if it is possible to convert a normal steel bull bar into a winch compatible bar? What is involved and how difficult is it? Thanks

As long as its not a air bag bar , it can be done . You need to cut 2 little slits in the bottom part of the bar for the winch to fit , then weld 2 straps from bolt hole to bolt hole were the winch sits , approx.. 5 mm would be great. Cut a hole for the fairleader up front and another hole in the top to view the cable and its done.
Had it on my 80 for years with no issues , I thought it looked more compact and neater than a winch bar

I went through this dillemma not so long ago when I fitted a new winch to the front of my truck.
The existing buull bar had served me
well and was keen to maintain that type of bar so went to the supplier who gave me a great spiel about it not being strong enough and the winch bars had different gauge steel, brackets etc etc etc.
Tho I thought he was a bit of a tosser, I had received the same response elsewhere so I ordered and payed for a new bar. Lo and behold upon delivery found it identical in every way to my existing bar except of course it had the cutouts for mounting the winch.
Many mutterings from your truly.
But I suppose if you can find a similar bar to the one you have at the moment with a winch or find a new one at the dealers, take a good look and make a valued decision.
Good Luck

Thanks Rock Crawler and John G for your replies. I looked hard at new winch bars but could see little difference between those and normal bars. I can't see the point in forking out another $1100 if the old bar on my GQ would do, with some minor mods. Cheers
