Are you running it with batterys or with external DC supply.
I know my eTrex shuts down when batterys are low or the DC plug has fallen out of the cig lighter socket.
I don't think there is a shut-down timer option in the Garmins???

Running off 12 volt power supply through original cig lighter supply.

Your baterys are flat and your cigarette plug is dodgy - common

OK..
Suggest you get a fresh set of quality batterys and see if the problem is still there.
If it doesn't shut down with fresh batterys- then check the plug into the lighter socket is ok and active...and see if you're getting voltage into the unit plug.
If all this looks OK..then I suggest an internall problem.

G'Day Pandj,
I suggest you follow Signman's advice, change to fresh batteries, and then if no luck, check all your connections. I have the same GPS and have checked the manual. There is no reference to "auto off" other than the back-light. ( which if used continually, will reduce battery life by heaps )
Regards,
Bazza.

Thanks Daveo, Signman & Capt.Wrongway.
I put new batteries in as is ok. Bl**dy stupid having a 12-6 volt transformer that won't work unless batteries are in it!

Hey PandJ I just ran outside to double check, and
mine runs fine without batteries.
Garmin 12 about 4 years old
Maybe its the type of 12v adapter you have.
We purchased ours from ebay and the plug is a lot fatter than your normal 12v plug for a light or similar. Maybe there is a step down in plug I have no idea but it will definately run on 12v without batteries.
Good luck

Hi ya Wrongway
Have you used the GPS 12 for working a route. From the book is looks as if you can only store 30 something waypoints in a route??
You might have to come around sometime (Camden) and give me a lesson.

I have a Garmin GPS II. I found that plugging it into the vehicle power supply did not over ride the batteries in the unit, they kept working until flat. I had to take the batteries out before it would work from the vehicle power supply.

I Have the Garmin 12
It will use external 12v power before the onboard batteries
Which is handy if the plug does fall out (and it will on rough roads at least
mine does) cause you don't get the crazy lines all over your maps!

Thanks Rod W & Batboy,
As mentioned above, tis stupid having a transformer and batteries as
well.
Have heard of a mod to the battery holders to fix this, will try and if works will post.
Thanks to all for the replies. P&J.

PandJ,
I have a Garmin 11, and some years ago it had the same problem. Inside theres a lithium battery. I'd say its that that needs replaceing but only by a Garmin repairer.
