Future
Shack, with estimated costs of as little as $25,000 a dwelling, is still a prototype, but thousands of people are already living in containers, albeit on a temporary basis. Australian company Royal Wolf Trading has been turning the steel boxes into housing since the late '90s, mainly for companies requiring temporary accommodation in remote areas. In the steel and iron ore areas of the
Kimberley, the mining areas of North Queensland and the Northern Territory and even the Antarctic, recycled shipping containers are providing affordable, comfortable accommodation that can be relocated in a few days.
Royal Wolf Trading hopes to broaden the market this year with a mass market range of prefabricated container homes it calls ContainAcom. The company says it has sold 90 containers and is supplying quotes for 100 more since they were unveiled last month. These start at $11,000 for a six-metre single container dwelling and rise to $140,000 for a three-bedroom house made from four 12-metre boxes, and are available from 14 depots across Australia.
The general manager of Royal Wolf Trading, Bob Allan, says ContainAcom is aimed at people who need fast, flexible and affordable housing - from the city couple who want to put a low-cost home on their "lifestyle block" down the coast to universities and local authorities seeking an innovative approach to low-cost housing.
