Going to Wonnangatta on the weekend. Anyone been there in the last week or so? How are the tracks?

Particularly interested in what are the fords are like, esp Wonnangatta R at Eaglevale and the Crooked River below Wongungurra junction. BOM web site says Wonnangatta R at Crooked R 1.72m and falling. What does that say about the fords upstream?

We are driving 95-series Prado with snorkel but no lift.

Des the 1.72metre level is not an indication of the depth of the ford if that is what you're thinking. Although I wasn't in there last weekend the rivers in general around Wonnangatta are running high (headlight level on average) but most would be drivable in a Playdoe. Eaglevale is always a challenging crossing with high spring flows so you may have to suck it & see by having a look yourself.
The Crooked river crossing at Winchester can also get deep if one goes straight accross but normally has a shallower route if you loop down stream a little.
Cheers Craig...........

Went into the Wonnangatta Monday cup weekend from Talbotville. One crossing lapped my windscreen (Hilux standard IFS front suspension), found out my snorkel works. No problems getting through. Pretty slippery up and down tracks, lot of trees across tracks. I went in with a couple of Patrols and a Cruiser. They had muddies, I had All Terrain Duelers with lowered tyre pressure. Heaps of fun and challenging going out via Water Spur Track (offHumphries River) and another from the helicopter pad on Tea Tree Spur Track.

Des,

River crossings - Wonnangatta River approaching Hearns Spur mid November 05 (Video 3.7meg)

This was about the third weekend in November.

If you are going from Wonnangatta to Talbotville and don't want to chance it or are travelling alone go the Wombat Spur option. There are about 10 crossings to the bottom of Hearns Spur, and though they would be lower now that the rain was a few weeks ago this gives a fairly good idea what the last few looked like when we went through.

None of the crossings on the track to the junction of Wombat & Hart Spur tracks provided any difficulty. They were probably just a bit over the steps.

With more storms expected tonight anything could happen - keep an eye on the automatic weather stations observations at Hotham Heights on the vic BOM site.

And the floor in the front too....

Good thing I needed to pull the floor vinyl up the next week to fit the NGT. I didn' t mind so much. Otherwise it's a prick of a job.

Any tips for drying the inside of head lights & driving lights without dismantling them would be appreciated....

He's a mechanic too. Therefore I figure he knows the risks. Or he knows how to fix it... he did comment he didn't want it any deeper. Nor did I.

He pops up here from time to time too.

Is it true that the Navy has requisitioned your mate's car - as its new "Patrol boat"? (Boom boom)

Thanks to all for your responses.

Spoke to ranger today. He said that several of the fords had been "roughed up" by winter floods but they were all crossable now. Said that (barring lots of rain) we shouldn't have any problems - depth likely to be up around top of tyres at most.

Forecast for showers on weekend is a bit disappointing though - tracks may be a bit slippery.

Cheers,
Des
