I will be travelling from
Brisbane to
Alice Springs. I am considering towing a vehicle back to
Adelaide for a friend. Can anyone advise what fuel (diesel) economy I would expect with and without towing a car trailer. The vehicle to be towed is an old VW Beetle.

Depends on your right foot, road, heat, head winds etc
I recently returned from QLD - WA with hzj75 fully loaded, no trailor and av 14l/100ks. Never exceeded 100k/hr 50% dirt roads.

Runty, 79 series traybacks give us about 6 - 7 km/L, all dependent on headwinds, load etc and speed. We only do short trips towing 2300L fuel tanks, so can't comment on that. Toyota's desire for more grunt for the faithfull, using tweaked motor, and lower geared diffs, means big drop from 75 series economy.
You should be right going from the Alice to
Adelaide, it's all downhill!
