The related site match for Navigation is your best start point - have a look at GPS article, then the overview & moving map articles. Then also a
Forum search above for GPS will yeild around 1648 threads. It would certainly be easier for some of the learned readers to have a more specific question on this as there are just soooooo many choices and options. Good luck.

I remember when I got lost once in the
Gawler Ranges.
Back in '94 I was doing a gravity survey, 1 km readings. It was cloudy and for some reason (perhaps complacency) I had left my compass back at
camp. In those days all I had was a simple GPS that only gave me the AMG's - No arrow to follow back then.
I had to record my position manually and then drive 200 metres or more to get another position and then calculate what direction I was travelling in. This was done many times. It took me hours to get back to
camp and a very relieved person I was too, as it was nearing dark.
But yes - getting lost does make one think.
Cheers
Equinox
PS - Always take your compass with you!!

Don't worry too much about how THEY work!!
Worry yourself more on your current finacial situation, how much you can afford, and what you want from the GPS.
I frequent the GPSAustralia
forum (a lot!) and you will find lots of useful help there on getting your first GPS device.
So keep in mind, what/how you want to use it, and then how much you can spend (~$180-$2K+) new, or $50-100 (used, off ebay! *Recommended*)
cheers.

Hi AuthurKing and Vehkis,
I can't say I agree with this "Don't worry too much about how THEY work!!" stuff. I have seen a lot of people get realy frustrated with GPS, simply because they did not understand a few basics.
The book Exploring GPS is a good reference for understanding the system, without being bogged down in the science and jargon. It even explains some of the useful jargon.
