I just got a quote for the 80k service $1400.00 approx plus brakes $145.00 they said that the motor needs tappets adjusted and may need shims to do at $25 per shim. I thought only diesels need shims to adjust, can anyone help??
Service seems extroadinarally expensive

yes i can help
Should have bought a nissan they dont quite rip you off as much!
$145 for brakes is not too bad evan if you do them you self still cost about the same as for $1400 service cost did they talk to you with a metal bucket on their head and gun in hand just find a reliable mechanic should be half that price my nissan at 80ks was $450 including front brakes good luck

$1400 seems to be the norm for Toyota and Nissan Patrol servicing at 80,000 Km. My wife worked for a Nissan dealership in
Perth for many years and the 80,000 service was the killer. The service manual stipulates that the front hubs have to be stripped, checked for any abnormal wear and repacked. The front and rear diff oils have to be changed, and so does the gearbox and transfer case on the manuals. The LSD in the rear uses LSD 90 and not your normal 80w/90 that is used in the front diff and gear box..
$145 for brake pads is a rip off if you are silly enough to by them from the dealer. I was quoted $130 for front pads for my 91 4Runner, $80 from an auto accessory
shop and then I remembered having used REMTEK brake pads in my previous sedans. I rang the company in Osborne
Park who sell these Pads and paid $29.70. No, thats NOT a mistake. I informed them that they were for the 4Runner, and was asked if I did a lot of off road work and that the brakes took a fair pounding. They replied saying that they had heavy duty semi-metallic pads ($29.70) in stock and would have them ready for me to collect.
SHOP AROUND BEFORE THE DEALER RIPS YOU OFF.

The 80,000 and 120,000 are expensive - the 100,000 is about $750 the labour charge component was 3.9 hours and the rest parts. The book recommends servicing every 5000k. My last service they used a semi synthetic oil that they stated was good for 10,000 k and eliminated the need for the 5000 k service - it would nor affect any warranty issues. Only thing required was the re-greasing of steering knuckles IF you do a lot of heavy off-road work.
Still bloody expensive - I agree. the alternative is do it yourself and bugger the warranty.

Hi. Petrol does have shims, twice as many as a diesel [1HZ] due to 24 valves and 2 cams. Current 4.2 factory turbo [1HD-FTE] is the old ajusting screw and feeler guage set up. Having said this it should not need new shims on every valve, some need no ajustment at all.
Regards Ken.

Shims only as needed. I think around the $13 ea mark is more like it. Sometimes you can shift them around from valve to valve too.
Take it to a specialist 4x4 place maybe?

You do not void your warranty by getting your car serviced somewhere else, as long as they are verified etc, so you can take your car elsewhere to get alternate prices. The service bills typically go up big time when you need brake disks replaced or the timing chain etc.

see "80,000 Landcruiser service for a Lancruiser" thread.
I sacrificed my warranty, for what it was worth, to have my car serviced by my local mechanic, who I have used for years. Fed up of overpriced, shoddy workmanship? Take it elsewhere and probably at a fraction of the cost.

Toyota quoted me $800 for a 40k service. My mechanic did the work for $350. Warranty unafected. Find a good mechanic!
